Hi all,

At the base of my extractors (just on the bend), there is a welded mount that goes back to the diff. The mount decided to dismount from the extractors taking a large (20cent piece size) piece of the pipe with it. I have been told it can be welded. Is this an exhaust shop job or something any mechanic could do?

While a decent mechanic could do it, I'd suggest taking it to a decent exhaust shop as they'll have a new bracket and should have the experience to do it right first go and most likely on the car.

Well, I've already taken it off the car because of the location there was no way to get a decent weld.

What sort of weld would it be? Oxy? MIG?

Most exhaust shops would want it on the car so as to get the angle of the dangle right, even if it was just a tack, and then take them off for a complete weld.

I'd use Oxy, however most shops would use MIG. Either are quite OK for this.

I figure, because the piece fits back into the pipe perfectly, the angle will not be any different.

I'm assuming you have a rod change box, it means the engine will move a bit more so more metal fatigue and this bracket is a common snapper. Mine has never done what yours did but I have had a few snap on me.
My solution was to add/replace the std bracket with with a 3mm thick 20mm wide metal strap. Also it simply doesn't just but up to the exhaust it is partly wrapped around it giving it much more area to weld, spreading the forces over a large area.
Yes your extractors can easily be welded back together. If it were me I'd weld the piece back in to the extractors out of the car then put it back in the car and replace the std mount with the larger one, positioned over the patch as much as possible :wink: .
If you get it done at an exhaust shop think about getting them to add a flexi joiner in front of the gear selector, relieves a lot of pressure of that bracket, extractors and the manifold studs.

Mine has the strap bolted to the housing and attached to the exhaust with a U bracket. I had a welded one rip once too.
