To those in the know, Is there a significance that can be taken from the stampings on a gearbox case (not the casting numbers). There is a little flat area on the drivers side front of the 4 synchro gearbox which can be stamped (but not always). The box I have (An 1128 4 synchro box)is stamped: 5/2781/2 Does it mean anything to anyone ? Mick |

My 4 synchro Cooper S box is marked F/XE 1215. All my other spare boxes are also stamped with numbers. I would think that they are serial numbers. with F denoting Cooper (as in the engine number 9F) and XE being close ratio. Another 4 synchro is stamped 22/7365. From an 022 Clubman??? - just guessing??? 997 Cooper box stamped 9F16536 Others? |

I'm reasonable sure that the Cooper S and Clubman GT Gearboxes were stamped there, but the Mini K, even though it was the same case, was not stamped. I've never bothered to keep track of what has been stamped on them so I cannot shed any light on their meaning. |

I've often wondered about that stamped number myself. I have 3 22G1128 boxes here : One has nothing, I think I was a mini K box 22\1374 - Came from an early clubman, still had hydro & remote 21/3507 - unknown origin, no visible differences to the other 2 cheers Jacob |

Not sure, but the info I was given was as follows: the stamped number was to indicate the gearset used FAXE followed by numbers denotes Cooper S gear set however these were not always stamped. Maybe this sheds some light |

Just done a little poking around on this. According to factory info every gearbox fitted to a car was stamped and this was the gearbox serial number. It would also appear (it's a bit criptic) that some (?) did have a prefix to denote special features, like remote shift, close ratio gears etc. No leads just yet on the list of prefixes and what they mean. I know I've seen quite a few with nothing stamped on them. |

From memory, the Mini Kingdom parts book has a list of these numbers. |

I've seen the type of marking Wild willy is describing, 9F.... F.XE etc. but also S and Cooper boxes with all correct gears, but no marking at all! John Schmidt might be a good port of call! ![]() |

I just noticed in a couple of Mini factory parts manuals that this is called the Transmission Assembly Number. |
