Post subject:  What Coolant do people use?...
Hi All,

Going to flush the cooling system in the Mini, never done it before, but doesn't really sound too hard so I figured i'd give it a go.

What coolant do people on here use?

Should i get a premixed one? or mix my own? any advantages / disadvantages?

If you buy premix you are buying coloured water, often with unknown concentration of glycol in it.
I buy Nulon ethylene glycol and mix my own, 20-25% concentration in water is plenty for Australia.
If you want even better, use distilled or de-ionised water instead of from the tap.

ive always bought that 500ml bottle of XTRA COOL, brand is Tectoloy.

its a concentrate, mix half the bottle into the radiator, save half the bottle for top ups.

Toyota make and sell a very good one. It is red in colour. Beats any other brand especially "attackalloy"

+1 for that, Great coolant 8) and the trendy red color makes a change from green

Distilled water and "wetta water".
Engine is as clean as a whistle.

I don't use glycol....it's an antifreeze :shock:

Glycol is also an antiboil. It raises the boiling temperature of water significantly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_glycol

I use Redline- Water Wetter.Excellent product- It's not cheap though.$30.00 for a 600m bottle.Do a search and read about it.
I also only use distilled water with this product.

So I never forget which brand it is I use and risk mixing coolant types.

Not so much of a problem these days I am told, but for a while cheap and expensive coolants would react and turn to gel. Then when enough passages were clogged in the radiator and the car boiled dry, the gel would turn to scale, which was an excellent heat insulate.

The ARE radiators website used to have excellent pages on this coolant mixing problem, and also other pages on stray currents and alumuminium radiators...but some of the links are broken..others are still a good read..

I have... Read the water wetter site properly... it is not glycol based...it just compares it to the properties of glycol.....'Satisfies ASTM D2570 and ASTM D1384 corrosion tests for glycol-based antifreezes' and your very nice quote above :wink:

Your right, Glycol is glycol and it needs to raise the the boiling point of water because as a coolant it isn't as good as plain old water :!:

If you want to see a mini motor overheat.. just run it on straight gycol :twisted:

+ 1 more. I use it in my Toyota. When i have my mini back on the road i'll be using it in that too. Make sure you flush the system with clean water when changing from green to red. I don't think they like each other and shouldn't be mixed.

So who makes the Toyota stuff? Because Toyota actually makes very little stuff themselves and uses outside suppliers for nearly everything.

I use Caltex coolant. I know who makes it.

Redline Water Wetter here, with Distilled water. Also heard good things about the Toyota coolant as well.
