Post subject:  2 pack or not 2 pack

I am slightly confused..... I am restoring a 67 Mini Deluxe.. I will be painting at home... I have been told that I cannot paint 2 Pac at home due to the chemicals however I can use Acrylics.... I sorta understand that and I want to use Acrylic anyway.. however I want to put down a base coat of Epoxy Primer on the raw metal, to seal it and then apply any bod to the body that is needed.... Is 2 Pack epoxy (epoxy and hardener) the same as 2 Pack paint..

For what I understand there is 2 Pack and 2 pack.. have I confused anyone yet?

firstly, no matter what anyone says, any spray painting at home is illegal.
It just so happens that 2 pak can kill you....bummer!
The chemical in 2K that does all the damage is called isocyanates, and it is in the hardener (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Your normal respirators wont save you, as the charcoal filters wont filter out the isocyanates, the only way to stop from breathing it in is to wear a positive pressure air fed respirator!
Hope that clears a few things up for you Dartz.
In answer to your question, 2K etch primers are all good to use with acrylic, but if your going to bog, then its gotta be bare metal!
Unless your going to use spray bog, which cant fill like normal bog and is best used over a eurathane primer.
PPG make a single pak etch primer called CT etch primer that is suitable for use under single pak and 2 pak paints.
Confused?
Bog = bare metal
2K etch primers = good with acrylics
2K = death and bad news
In summary, just stick with acrylics if spraying at home.

you can spray acrylic at home, its not illegal if your only doing it to one car.

you should put sheets up around your garage to stop floating paint leaving your garage.

I painted a car years ago, and had the cops turn up, they thought i was running a business out of my garage, when they found out it was MY car, and it was only being done once they said no probs.

its just if you do it continually, or as a business out of your garage.

Thanks for the reply guys.....
So would the below be ok

Strip to bare metal
Coat bare metal with phosphoric acid mix to convert rust...
Etch Primer until ready to work on Body
Rub back etch primer to bare metal to apply Bog
Run hi fil primer and block
Run surface Primer then Sand
start the colours
Run Clear coat
sand a million times in between coats of everything

etch primer is porous and absorbs water. use an epoxy primer if you are going to leave it long in that condition. epoxy is a far better product anyways but some old skool painters who havent caught up with technology will tell you etch is better. do your own research, theres plenty of sites that will set you straight. with epoxy, the sanding you do prior to applying is the mechanical etching process.
its good to apply bog to bare metal, otherwise you are just going to sand back your other coats trying to even it out.
your process look right, just dont sand the last coat of colour before you put the clear on - you will dull the finish.

Dtrain, thanks for the reply... thats where I get lost.. isnt epoxy primer a 2 Pack product that cant be painted at home?

I would prefer epoxy over etch but its the 2pack part of the process I am worried about

This mask claims to be safe to use when spraying isocyanate paint, if the special conditions are followed.

You beat me to it. There are many filters on the market now. Most good auto paint supply places can sell you one that is safe to use with 2k paint.
On the down side No you are not allowed to paint at home and it is not a police matter it was set by the EPA, and is under the management of local council. One of the reasons I recently moved to acerage.
As for painting 2k at home if you are a novice and from what you have asked it is fair to say yes, then steer away from 2k paints. As they take much longer to tack off than acrylic what you see when you lay it is not what you get about 5 min later. Acrylic is easier to use and get a good finish. I always use 2k for the base work and acrylic colours. For an older car I like the look of acrylic colours but it is a personal preference. 2k even sanded still looks like a lollie wrapper to me. 2k doesnt shrink as much. A good tip if you use filler on your car, apply the primer after and allow at least a couple of weeks for it to shrink back. (One of the main reasons you see cars develop ripples after repairs are finished) You can use a hi-fill primer that is acrylic and is a primer filler in one to take up any margins from the shrink. You cn use a guide coat to help you locate the edges and ripples but a better way it to do the following.

Sand the primer filler with 600 wet, let it dry and wipe off the rubbing waste. Then use brand new muslin cloth to buff up the primer (no polish just cloth) Put the car in shade and get down and look along the body. You should easily see high and low spots, mark them with a lead pencil. Rub back and repeat again and again. You may need to apply extra coats of high fill as you are rubbing it away each time. Tedious yes but the results will be worth the effort.

saving yourself isnt the only thing that is a concern.

spray booths trap all the contanination, spraying in an open garage is not legal with 2 pac. What about saving your neighbours. Oh and the environment.

I can't find any information at all that says spraying with 2 pac is illegal in my garage in Tasmania, on top of that I don't like my neighbour.
