Greetings All.
I'm all confussed! I have had bore and pistons for my "8Y" 850 done/made. The bad news was the Thrust Washer part of the crank is 10thou worn so I need another crank.

I have just started to strip a donor "8AM"850 motor for the crankshaft (Hope it's OK?) I now see the donor 8AM has a Vetro type clutch, whereas my original 8Y had a diaphram type.

Q1: Will the donor 8AM crankshaft be OK (if in good condition) and does this mean I can fit a new Vetro clutch kit (Is Vetro better?) &
Q2: To get this Vetro clutch off. Do I use the 3 X 1/2" threads to push the assembly off the shaft?

I also noticed the clutch housing on the donor 8AM does not have the "blocked off spout" at the top where I see some Mini's fit breathers. Does it matter?

I doubt if it's actually a verto clutch - they were only fitted to ~1984 onwards UK cars - early 850's had springs in the clutch plate, after that they had a plain clutch plate...

to tell if it's a verto, the clutch arm is very short, and the slave cylinder is mounted on the wok cover

dunno about 3 x 1/2" threads, but there are usually 3 x 3/8" threads that you use for a flywheel puller that works by pushing against the tail of the crank - there's a how-to on how to make one that'll show you how to do it

Early 850 (8AM) engines had a spring type clutch and a small tail crank, the later engines (8Y) had the diaphragm type clutch and the larger tail on the crank. It sounds like you are trying to replace a large tail crank with a small tail crank, if you do that you will have to use the spring clutch. You would be better off finding a large tail crank, there not that rare.

The transfur housing without the "blocked off" spout is common to early 850 engines, the later Aussie made 8Y engines used the "spout type.

Heres a pic of the spring type clutch, so you can confirm what you have.

Thanks Simon & 850 Man.

As the 8Y had a Diaphram type spring (a round band) I presumed the other was a Vetro. (I was looking at a UK parts list)

850 Man, the picture U posted with 6 coil springs is what it has. At this stage I can't get the clutch off or the pulley bolt off. I just lifted it back into wagon and will get MiniSport (who have done the block / piston work to either pull it apart, or reject it. There is a little float when I pull the pulley wheel. If it's worn Thrust Washers I may use it. If it's crank wear I'll try another motor. I have a few scouts out who have found more 850's.

Just re-read your response. Are you saying large tail with diaphram clutch would be better option?
