Post subject:  re mini auto gearbox

Hi
Will a auto gearbox off a 998 be suitable for use with a 1275?
Cheers

Should be, though things could be complicated depending what yar block and what year gearbox. For example, in the 90s the auto boxes had a 'park' function, so you can really only have a 998 or 1275 a+ block. Not that it's the block that's different either, depends how the drop gears and torque converter work between years and engine sizes too.
:?

i dont know the answer, but with a larger crank you may need to cut the edges of the box to allow the crank to pass through.

someone else will have the answer, ive only ever seen an auto on a 850/998 not a 1275. They may well have been on 1275's.

You'll need to block off the oil filter on the block as the auto box uses a larger oil filter. Also, the dip stick on the block is different for an auto gearbox (dipstick on RHS rather than center). There are a few other different bits as well.

'drmini in aust' and 'niceboy 1275' will know more as will 'morris 1100'. Best waiting for their advice :)

Read my thread in mods forum re how to convert a 1275 auto block to manual.
You need to reverse all these changes to the block somehow.
Or if rebuilding the motor, swap your manual block for an auto one. I have a std bore unmolested 1275 auto block (with bearing caps) here.

Hey Doc,

I think you need a different subframe for the auto - is this true??

Yes you need one. They are 1" or so wider, and the front rail is curved forward too.
Auto mounts are different.
They were all hydrolastic here in Oz, but you can bung rubber cones in, if you must...
