Just talking to Fred yesterday in fact. Yes, he is from Wavell Heights, Brisbane. Fred is and always has been heavily involved in racing since the 60s. He helped Peter Manton and lots of other famous names. He recently built my group Nb engine. Should be very big HP from this 1293. Fred is very busy at the moment trying to get Sports Sedans registed as a historic catergory, YAY!!!!. Cars built from 1971 to 1982. He no longer racers but has resigned to building very fast Minis. Without a doubt Fred Sayers would be in the top five in the country regarding how to get power out of an A series. He is a quiet man that doesn't do any chest beating, he doesn't need to blow his own horn. He has the proof of his ability. No bullshit from him. He's really done it. Fred Sayers in the early 70s raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship in The Dick Johnson XU-1 Torana, not his but was asked to drive it. A very likable man. If you ever get the chance to talk to him as Molly would say do yourself a favour. Oh yes Fred did build 'Nuts' Bill Westermans black Twini and that Clubbie was that his crossflow monster??? Can we see the story or pictures???? |

![]() ![]() At Surfers Paradise Fred Sayer Ready for the Kevin Clark's Mustang ![]() I can't help with the Mini but I was working on that Mustang at that meeting! Fred beat Kevin's Mustang in the first heat and Kevin beat Glen Seton (One of Glens very first races) after a race long dice between three of them. (they finished 8th, 9th and 10th outright) In the second heat Glen finished up in front of Kevin and Fred was behind them. (they finished 9th, 10th and 11th outright) The Mustang had a gearbox lock up just after turn 1 at around 150 mph in practice and we spent Saturday night in Brisbane rebuilding the box. Ahh memories! |

Thanks for the plug Mick. Yes, there is a feature on Nuts, the Twini Mini, in Issue 1 of The Mini Experience (weve still got plenty of back copies). Fred Sayers gets a gurnsey there and there is a pic of him as well. According to Fred, historic sports sedans have been accepted by CAMS for historic race meetings as of next year. Fred has been heavily involved in getting this happening. We will be having a feature on these cars in a future issue of the mag, including at least one very impressive Clubby sports sedan with crossflow head, etc. If you are interested in Super Minis, and can get to Goulburn (near Canberra) then check out the next round of the Super Minis at Wakefield Park in July. Email organiser, Brian Walden at [email protected] for details. Watto. ![]() |
