Hey,

I was wondering how hard it is to remove the gearbox from the mini?

Im thinking about getting my gearbox rebuilt but im not sure if i should take the box out of the car myself or take it to someone and get them to remove the box and replace the parts that need replacing.

From what ive gathered the syncro for 3rd to 2nd is stuffed and id like to replace a few parts like the final drive and other parts that wear out.

Is anyone able to give me a rough idea on what price rebuilding or replacing the parts that wear out would cost if someone else was doing the work?

Thanks Blake

Removing the gearbox will entail engine / gearbox (power unit) removal and then seperating the gearbox from the engine.

Apart from something safe to lift the power unit from the car, there are no special tools needed, however to seperate the gearbox from the engine you will need a 1 1/2" Socket (or ring spanner) and a flywheel puller.

Cost of parts alone would be in the $400 to $600 range, depending on what you actually needed and where you shop.

I'd suggest a ring around to find a cost for having the job done for you.

Thanks,

Is it worth doing it myself or are there to many things that could go wrong for someone that has never done it before?

Im considering taking the whole car to someone and saying go nuts but i was also thinking of buying a box rebuilding it and just pulling the old one off and replacing it with the new one.

Thanks Blake

its not that hard a job to take apart, just group your bolts and stuff so you know what goes where on the rebuild. There are some things that should be looked at, but if your going to put the same parts together there less worry.

whats the intention with the gearbox, a rebuild, a swapover.

when you put it all backtogether few things to watch out for. the half moon seal needs to sit tight, make sure you dont drop the ring seal (drop of oil pressure), the gap on the idler gear for reduction of road noise.

putting the clutch back together is pretty straight forward, but just need to be careful its torqued up right.

As Drexxle says, it's not a hard job but, if you've never done one I'd suggest having someone show you through. There are many finer points of it that an experienced eye would show you, that are just simply not in any workshop manual.

Getting another box to re-build and then swap over is always a good idea, especially if you need to keep it on the road, but again I would suggested having someone look over your shoulder.

<EDIT> There are a few 'special' tools that you would need, but they are not complicated. I made most of mine and you don't need a machine shop to make them
