Hi everyone!

This is more a question for all the welders and panel beaters out there! im about to replace my battery box. I was just wondering how everyone else has done theirs? is it ok to just mig weld it in? I understand they were orgionally spot welded and brazed on the corners? I dont have the gear to do this however... Is there any sealant to ensure it doesnt rust out again that i should be using aswell?

this will be my first time welding, so i just want to make sure i do it right!

Thanks everyone!

Most people drill holes through the flange then plug weld with the MIG.

Mine was only rotted in the bottom, so I cut all the base out except for a 4mm flange around the edge. Then I cut a piece of 2mm plate, dropped it inside and MIG welded it.
A bit or rubber underseal paint and it looks like a bought one again.

I riveted one in - plenty of Silaflex around the lip and a coat of tar inside and out then colour paint to suit the rest of the car.

I replaced mine last week. Cut the old one out with an angle grinder, bought a new battery box, beat the absolute crap out of it because it was the wrong shape, then beat it into something closer, sandblasted and epoxy primed it followed by stone guard / sound deadener, then welded it into the top by plugging holes with a mig.

I hasn't welded anything in about 8 years before that. Now I want to weld something else.

if i was to do mine again i would just cut the bottom off (thats where it mainly rusts) and just make up a piece outta metal i have lying around. the the prefab ones arent always a perfect fit.

made mine out of 1.2.. seems alot heavier than the rusty one I cut out... could have gone with 1.00 but at least this way the car wil rust out before the Batt Box..

Might look at rivetting in.be easier if I ever need to remove
