Lost use of the clutch, pedal goes to the floor but then realised the clutch master cylinder is pushing the rod all the way out and forcing it past the circlip causing it to fling out. Put a kit through the clutch master cylinder and new clevis pins but still the same. I have been told it will be the thrust bearing. How can I be sure it isn't something else like the clutch itself. My car has been sitting in the yard for nearly a month while I work out what to do next. Change the thrust bearing and get it going again or pull the engine out for a much needed rebuild. No rush as I now have another car I can drive to work.

Sounds a bit like a broken release arm.
The little ball snapped off the bottom of mine and it behaved how you describe.

replace the arm AND the plunger.

the ball will wear the hole in the plunger giving you heaps of play. If it were a thrust bearing you would hear it failing, it would sound all grindy when you put your foot on the clutch. your going to have to take the wok out to replace the plunger.

block under gearbox, jack on block, undo the mounts, jack up the clutch side of the motor (be careful how high you jack it), one bolt on the wok may be a hassle to get to, have fun fiddling.

take the wok out, undo the overthrow bolt on the plunger, slide it out. throw it away, replace with new plunger and thrust bearing, put wok back, jack down bolt up, new arm, your done. a couple of hours work.

I replaced the old lever arm, plunger & thrust bearing on my clutch. Wow what a difference. My gearbox feels better than it has in years! I don't think you'll regret doing it.

it's amazing how much difference new bits in there make - all those little bits of wear do add up to a lot. Even if it's not the actual problem, it's worth doing

its not a hard job and most of it is a half inch spanner.

if you get a new plunger and thrust bearing, get them to press the bearing on. The arm is an easy replacement. The plunger bearing assembly is only a matter of taking the wok off the clutch and putting it back on (and your engine mount on/off). no real mechanical work involved.
