Post subject:  Pushrods, valves and the cam
G'day all'

Ribena's been running pretty rough of late - a compression check showed # 2 was the problem - so, off with the head and sure enough, burned out valve. Anyway, new valve, regrind all the others, new water pump and bypass hose etc etc - sit the head back on and put the pushrods back in the correct order and one of them didn't sit where it was supposed to. It was 2 or 3 cm higher than all the others.

On inspection, it appears that the cam follower might be broken and part of it may have fallen into the sump or somewhere. I can turn the engine over by hand and all the other pushrods do the right thing but the "suss" one jams the engine - I have to turn the engine backwards to un-jam it.

What has happened :?:

Do I have to take out the engine to get the cam follower out :(

Take the 2side covers off the back of the block (if it's an 850-998-1098 or 1275S)- I bet you have managed to lift one of the lifters out of its hole when you yanked the pushrod. :lol:
Have a look there first. Pretty uncommon to bust a lifter and have it drop into the gearbox- it's gotta get past the cam first!

Cheers Doc - I didn't know there was a cover there. I thought it was kinda unusual to break one of them and in fact for it to get past the cam !!!! I'll check again first thing in the morning. You've changed my mood from depression to "YES" Thanks Doc :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Rod, stick your finger down the followers
check that the push rods havent punched holes into the bottoms
sharp edges usually means yes

get new push rods and followers :wink:

Only A series followers I've ever seen with holes in 'em were the ones in Chong's latest (free) 1100S block he got- had been in the weather...
Its followers are all rusted in the holes- someone managed to punch hole in some, trying to bash 'em out! :lol:

I'd check that pushrod for straightness though- roll it along a table to check. :wink:

Don't worry about it.. :wink:
Check the bottom end of the pushrods though- if there's a little `tit' worn on it in the centre, grind it off.

Yes the tappet cover does have a use other than to leak oil to protect the firewall from rust :lol: :wink:

Also lets you pull the lifters out, then the cam- get the bugger reground to something better, and put back in! :P
Whilst it's in the car... hard to do that, with a non-S 1275.. 8)

Ribena is back on the road after a few days R and R with some new bits and pieces and she's running great again. I didn't check the push rods for straightness like you suggested Doc (didn't know that trick) but will do on any future rebuilds.

I'm still working on Sherman - that's Erin's clubby then we have to pull out the engine on Dylans clubby - hmmmm, the fun never ceases does it.
