I am basically here to have a BIARCH! session....

I am currently stripping down a 67 Deluxe to the metal using Paint stripper... the outside was a Breeze..

The boot Peeved me off a little but I got there... the inside?? lets not talk about the inside...

The engine bay, well...thats where I am at.. Putting on stripper is easy... wait 3o mins or so and then scrape the crap outta it to get the paint off... dont sound hard....

All those nooks and cranies.... thats the killer...

Doing the ouside was easy, scrapped it off and neutralised it with Metho... the inside and the boot however is another subject.. the only way I can see, doing it right is run a high pressure hose on it to neutralise the stripper and blow away all the bad bits...

But HEY... this is raw metal , last thing I wanna do is Breed rust....

Well thats my BIARCH session over... cracked the wobblies. gunna crack a red wine.. feel bad for myself and then tommorrow back to normal, excited again and get stuck into it

Kevin

I used a high preasure hose on my shell to neutralise the stripper, every weekend for about a month. I then spent more time drying it then I spent stripping it. I know, What about all the little nooks and cranies, well there was so much rust in it anyway that most panels were replaced anyway. And when the panels were off all the nooks and cranies were cleaned out and POR15 added.

Bare metal+water=rust

I used to work on a dried flower farm, we had huge drying ovens large enough to fit a Caddy in, it was great for drying out my stripped and pressure washed 49Merc body and many other various bits

Find a dried flower farm/ business and sling em a $50 and cook all the water out

So is the moral of the story this:

Dont strip the Mini to bare metal until you are ready to spray it immediately?

What if i sprayed it immediately with filler primer first. I heard that normal primer tends to absorb water. Would this also apply to the filler stuff?

strip it, do your bog work, get some form of primer (epoxy or etch), then go for your life with the primer filler.

If you had the time, then that is the way,,,In saying that.. I spoke to a mate that does restore old motorbikes.. he doesnt paint his frames or tanks straight away.. he sprays the raw metal with 'INOX" similar to WD40 but better... that stops rust for a while. have done that...

Mini is garaged which is a bonus, stops the Yocals walking away with it or using it as a flinstone car

Hope it hasn't got silicone in it like WD40 - paint won't stick if it has

I've known blokes to do all sorts of things like this. As wombat says, avoid any substance with silicone in it!
I knew a bloke who used his wifes vegetable oil (or was it canola oil?), Worked a treat for ages.

Actually kev, your panels have been sitting bare for a little while now, so remember to use deoxidine (or similar stuff) before putting on any paint.
