I was wondering what is the best engine for maximum speed?

I think Malcolm Campbell proved a big **** jet turbine was the go. Maybe 25000 shaft horse power would do it, maybe a GE LM2500 then.

But whats the context?

for a roundie dumbo - do you think that makes a difference given that they are more aerodynamic than those bluff fronted ones?

Must be some drag coefficient calculations out there somewhere... :P
Beyond that, I suppose there's no substitute for cubic inches.

There's not much difference in drag between a roundy and the `Ford fronted' ones. They are both pretty poor CV, but better than a Moke (with or without the tent erected). :lol:

I would think a Mk 1 or Mk 2 1275 engine. I did read as a bog standard item they'd reach 100mph or just under.

but not all 1275 are created equal. Would a tuned 1100 beat a boggo 1275?

I feel that a supercharged 1098 would beat a stock standard 1275, but thats assuming the block has in fact been painted red to make it go faster.

What do you base that on? Wouldnt a blown 998 be better than an 1100?

I had my std cooper s upto 115 mph once, :roll: it said so on the speedo :wink: and can be backed up by the fact that this story is now on the internet, and therefore must be true

A couple of little stories from the 70's. I was in the National Service at the time, I had a 997 Cooper that I had modified quite a bit, it had an 1100cc block with a worked head, Wade 140 cam, weber and a few other bits, I thought it was very quick until another Nasho said come for a ride in my 1275 Cooper S, it was brand new, about a month old, at the time I could not beleive how quick it was, I was shell shocked, within 2 weeks I had traded the Cooper on a new Cooper S. The fact it was a brand new car I think made a big difference it was so much faster than my 1100.
That same car was a very very good example we compared it to my then new S and his was always that little bit better all round in performance.

As to top speed, back before the hume freeway was built in Victoria there was a big hill called 'Pretty Sally' near Seymour, we had 4 Nasho's on board the S and he wound it off the clock going down this long long hill, I remember the needle wound right past the 120mph mark, it was down hill though. His was a very good stock S though and he could readily pull 100 even on a flat ground but there was nothing much left in it.

By the way there were no speed limits then!

Back in 1969 (no fixed open road limit in NSW then) a Mk2 Police Cooper S was good for 106MPH, downhill. So said Mr Plod when I slowed down for a town, and he finally caught up. :oops:

My problem is by the time you have hit 100mph you have done half a lap of the island.
