Hey,

Ive got myself a gearbox that im going to rebuild to replace my current one with. is there anything i should look for with this new box to see what needs replacing? i know i should get someone that knows gearboxes to have a look which i will do but i just wanted to see if there was anything i could start looking at until i get around to taking it to someone to look at.

All the gears look like they are in good condition with no chips or anything but im not sure about wear

It really needs to be stripped to check properly. However to get some idea- if you grab the gear on the 1st motion shaft and can wiggle it about, the gearbox needs bearings. And probably a layshaft- synchros- synchro hub springs, maybe selector forks, etc.
It's a lottery mate if you don't strip it. :wink:

this is a tough one to explain in writing, there is ALOT of places to look.

forks could be worn or bent, dog teeth could be worn and not engage, shafts could be pitted from bearings rubbing on them, baulk rings could be worn and not engage gears, gaps and measurements could be out by small amounts.

i would suggest getting someone to mentor you through this process. ive built four or five gearboxes and each one has been a learning curve.

on my travels people like Mini Automotive, Mini & Moke World, MiniSport, Brickworx, and others have all pointed me in the right direction. You can put it together easily enough, but knowing whats worn and where takes an eye for knowing what to look for.

A good place to start is with all new bearings, check your shafts, replace the baulk rings, and the selector forks.

First of all, you want to see gears in the gearbox, at least 4 forward and 1 backward :lol:

Really it would be good to have someone who knows gearboxes of any sort to give you guidance, the wear on the synchro rings is pretty easy to assess if you have a good manual. The selector dogs, rings and forks though need a trained eye in my opinion. There are measurements for certain clearances throughout the gearbox so whatever you do, make sure any clearances are correct.
