Post subject:  upgrade the uni's or change to pots?

So ive got a few gearboxes lying around now, (3 and a spare motor)

i know at least 2 of them have pot outputs, i hope to change my diff in a few weeks and was looking at my sad unis today whilst playing with suspension bits, they are rubber, they are sad, they are cracked and i actually shuddered a little when i realised that THOSE are the the things making the wheels get to 90km/h.... i froze...

so what to do? do i get some nylon cup uni's and call it a day, or go the whole hog and swap them to pots (either way ill be changing diff seals, bearings etc so ill either buy nylon uni's or need to find pot inner cv's)

advice?

Pot joints are relatively trouble free, and while you are changing the diff out would be an ideal time to upgrade from those rubber POS

Yeah pots as ^^ for 99% of applications are quite OK and IMO make engine removal quite easy too. Very reliable but ONLY if you make sure the boots are always up to scratch.

Changing to pots will mean you need different driveshafts, so factor that into the equation. We can discuss at Oct 13th SWOM

If you can't be arsed pulling the diff apart or changing driveshafts, fit QH5000 needle bearing unis, they bolt straight in replacing the rubber ones.
Were NLA for years but are available again.

Its no big deal to pull the diff apart ...ehh Kev :)

And pot joints are pretty well bullet proof - unlike the QH plastic needle joints which are VERY sensitive to assembly torque (and disastrous if you get it wrong) and (IMHO) smoother than the hardy spicer type.

I just use second hand bits - and there's a bunch of dead Clubman donors out there ..... I think cheap is the word :)

Cheers, Ian

as previously mentioned, make sure the boots STAY ON.

grit and dirt is very easily picked up, and sticks to grease well.

i have done couple of thousand k's off road and have had zero problems with pots.
