Post subject:  Cooper S rims tubeless?
Hi All,

Just getting rubber put on my cooper S freshly powder coated rims and the tyre place have rang up and said that the need tubes in because there is no safety lip?

Is this correct, grom memory they are the lp883 rims.

Anyone?

They are tubeless. they just don't have a lip.

Go to a tyre service that knows what he is talking about.

If you put tubes in them you will get rust in the rims.
The non-rusty ones you find have been run tubeless. :wink:

I think those ribs - which are designed to stop under-inflated tyres coming off the rim are what the "J" or "JJ" labels that you see on later rims refer to.

You may find that some tyre fitters absolutely refuse to fit tubeless tyres to S rims - BTDT. If so, just say thankyou and go somewhere else.

Maybe I don't let my tyres get under-inflated but I've never (sic) rolled a tyre off an S rim.

Grr.. I'm having this issue ATM. Have spoken to 2 tyre places.

They seem to be worried about liability. One agreed with me that it doesn't make sense. Still the same tyre to come off the rim if it becomes under inflated. With a tube it's more likely to be sudden.

Any suggestions where I might try in Wollongong or Sydney.

It's not that they don't know what they are talking about, just that they are being cautious.

Here if the vehicle is getting certified (what you guys call engineered) the tyres HAVE to be run with tubes unless they are a bead-lock rim. This pretty much rules out all steel rims being run tubeless.

Whereas standard vehicle can be run tubeless.

BTW most Mini mags (Contessas, Jellybeans, etc) have no bead safety seats either, I've never had anyone refuse to fit 10" tyres to them.

[edit] the other prob with tubes is you cannot get 165/70-10.. they don't exist here now.

I managed to find a place in who agreed to do it (over the phone) but I would have to inflate the tyres myself. :?

When I got there different guy said no, they will need to fit tubes as there is no safety bead.

After much disscussion they agreed to do it. They are fitting as I write this so fingers crossed there will be no issues.

Thanks to those that suggested places I could go, and there are a couple I know of too that would do it but just not convenient to get to ATM.

Is anyone aware of any insurance issues if a tyre rolls of a rim and it's got no safety bead. I also have Mambas, Contestas, and widened LP883's. None have safety beads.

Has this been a major issue for others or have I just been unlucky?

I get the feeling the tyre shops are covering their arses big time.

Interested in others opinions/experiences.

Many folks (me included) have hammered around Wakefield Pk etc without beadseats, with tubeless tyres. I've not seen one roll off yet.

What do the Nb racecars do- many of them are running widened (welded) Contessas (out to 5-1/2") with A032Rs, Hoosiers, etc etc...??? Do these use tubes?

I got tyres fitted to my 1100 the other week and no questions were asked.
As far as I know there is no specific rules about it.
These cars were sold new as tubeless with these wheels.

I have asked the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia for a clarification about tubes and tubeless tyres on these rims.
After looking though the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia Standards Manual it appears that 10" wheels are not supposed to have a J section anyway.
The approved rim contours for 165/70R10 tyres are 4.00B, 4.50B, 5.00B, 5.50B. (not a J in sight!)

Tubeless truck wheels don't have locking beads. :wink:
