Post subject:  Rocker Arm and Shaft Assembly question??

Hello All, Whilst working on the top half of our 1098 engine i have strtipped and cleaned up the rocker arm shaft assembly..it does have some wear marks along the shaft, is this critical??

I do have some spare assemblies but i am not sure off what engine, are they interchangable?

As i said there is wear along the shaft but minimal play can be felt on the actual rockers??

Any advice?

Cheers TSB

all the small bores are interchangeable if they are standard.

Depends what you mean by "critical".

The engine will still run ok-ish with really worn rockers, but they will be very noisy and difficult to adjust.

The rule of thumb when rebuilding a motor is to use a new rocker shaft at least. If you can run your fingernail along the shaft and feel lots of ridges, it's had it and needs replacement.

They're pretty cheap so for the peace of mind and quieter valve gear, I'd get a new rocker shaft. Then dissemble all the other rocker sets you have and make up a set with the least wear on the new shaft - nice and quiet! :)

Shafts wear more than the bushes in the early rockers.
If the bushes are good, fit a new shaft, give it regular oil changes and it'll run for a zillion miles.
Once the shaft has wear, you don't get good lube distribution to all of em, then some wear even more.
I have seen late model sintered rockers (unbushed) wear right through and fall off the shaft... IMO they are rubbish.

They were on a 1275 engined yellow Clubby my boss bought off eBay.
Rego label says it's from Tassie.
It has a 45DCOE on a Lynx manifold (not a gooseneck one) and Camira disc brakes.
I fixed the shagged rockers but the motor has a bad knock in it, we've not had a chance to strip it yet.
Cracked crank or worn out big ends is my diagnosis...
