Post subject: | Timing Chain Advice |
Hello All, We have removed the timing cover and as per the manuals having everything in place TDC etc no problems there, timing marks appear to line up fine, however how much play or slack should be in the chain?? cheers TSB |

not alot, you get slap if its got to much, and it will run like crap. Its running your cam, and as you go through the rev ranges during changes it will tune out. when you got your foot down it tightens up and you wont notice it. when its idling are you getting much noise at that end of the motor. for the price, get a double row timing chain and throw that in there. |

hey drexxle thanks for your reply, i have not had this motor running i am just trying to do some basic essentials before dropping it in sometime over the next few months, overhauling the clutch, getting the head done for unleaded etc. Chain has about 10mm play in it?? Ta tsb |

10mm yeah it's had it. You'll probably find the sprockets are worn too. As Drexxle says I'd fit a duplex kit. Don't forget to countersink the 2 bottom engine plate screw holes and fit csk screws so they miss the chain, also some timing covers need mods inside to clear (early ones are OK). |

And the mod is easy, as the cover is tin. make sure you have all the gaskets you'll need! I made this mistake when fitting my duplex kit and it pushed the whole thing back. |

![]() ![]() ![]() If it looks likes this its buggered ![]() ![]() ![]() should look like this. this is a double row rollmaster set. ![]() sounds like you have it under control. like the DOC said, just ensure the screws are countersunk enough. should be flush with the end plate. |
