they have these for 99 bux at the local supercheap, and am going to buy one on payday. Anybody used one of these before. For 99 bux are they good enough to do a floor panel.

inverter welder adjustable up to 130 amp (not that you need it for floor panels), should be ok but for $99 i'd be reading a few product reviews if you can find them. check what amps it will go down to as well

mig is always a better option.

They are a very popular stick welder with the maintenance blokes at work. Due to the small size you can carry it anywhere.
Last week we had a bloke up on a cherry picker welding the blow up pipe on a cement silo using one of them.

im only in a home garage and only working on my stuff. Cheaper than getting someone else to do the work and good practice for me.

just have to find a decent mask to go with it.

Sounds too good to be true- but if it is, grab one, then spring for a cheap TIG torch and a bottle of argon.

I just had a look in Supercheap the one I saw for $99 is just a basic stick welder, if this is the one you are loking at you will struggle to weld body panels with it

i used just htis stick welder a couple of weeks ago to weld the engine steady/clutch hose mount back onto the 997 body where it had cracked off. I was only lucky it worked because the metal here seems to be a little thicker than elsewhere on the car.
Not bad welders..you can get them for 75 on sale..and they make a pretty nice arc with little spatter for a single phase welder, but wouldn't use it for metal work on a car body however..

Apparently skilled weldors can get reasonable results with a stick welder, but it's hard enough with a decent MIG as the steel is quite thin in places. You may get away with it for floor pans but I'd seriously put the money towards a MIG.

Wait... you used a stick welder on a 997 Cooper!?

I had no choice....

If I could take a decent photo deep down in there I could show you just how professional it came out. And I'm an awful stick welder. I don't know how I got it right. Its a nice smooth bead.

I'll look at it again when I pull it down later on, but let me tell you there's little to look at...I jagged it pretty nicely

Nothing wrong with a stick welder as long as there's a bit of metal thickness.
Stronger than most 240V MIG cockysh!t when welding thicker stuff...
Just use decent rods- WIA's Austarc 12P gets my vote for out of position work and ease of use. They strike and run great on small machines.
