Greetings All. Slowly putting my 850 block together. Just slid the camshaft in (new oil pump), Cleaning and test fitting bits before goo and gaskets. With the cam thrust plate (triagular 3 bolts) bolted in, the cam floats back and forth more than expected. Donor motor has the same play. Does the timing chain centralise the running of the camshaft? I presume you wouldn't want any pressure on the oil pump pin. The workshop manual and parts book doesn't mention any shims etc. ??? Alex |

timing gear pulls it up against that triangle plate doesn't it? |

Thanks Simon. I'm presuming it would do something like that. As above, you wouldn't want any load at the pump end. I'm gonna sleep on it and tommorow night I'll carry on. We've got a long weekend in Adelaide and I'm hoping I'll have it together and in the front frame by Monday. Cheers Alex. |

I have seen similar post to this come up here before. The lobe faces are not (or at least should not) paralell to the centre line of the camshaft, they are tapered all the same way and the faces of the cam followers are not flat, they are ground to a radius. If you actually have a look at the alignment of the followers over the lobes you'll see that the followers are not centred but off-set. This causes the cam to run with a thrust in ONE direction only, ie in to the thrust plate. This is why there is only one thrust plate and not two. The oil pumps as not designed to take end thrust although some of the later ones with the steel cover plate will take some. |

ahh, I see - so during assembly the cam sprocket is holding the cam in the right spot, but while the engine is running, the cam will be pushing itself against the thrust plate in simple terms |

Yes. So when you do check the sprocket alignment, across the faces, you need to apply gentle leverage on the camshaft to the front of the engine (ie in to the thrust plate). |

GT MOWOG. This is my first atempt to insert a picture. Yolan (Mrs) had to set up a storage site bucket thing'y. If this works I'll get some onto the Members Gallery section during the weekend. you need to use the [img]image[/img] tags for the bb forums. ^^^^ up there on your edit box. so your img will load into the post. |

In Photobucket, display the image you want and look at the left of the page. You'll see a box called Share this image. If you click on the link in the last box called IMG Code it should copy that link to the clipboard from where you can paste it into your Ausmini post. Like this:

Thanks Winabbey and drexxle Just got in from the shed. OoooEeee! I'm making progress. I will take note of how to upload as you explained. It's funny, I use complicated programs and data bases all day at work, but stuggle with internet stuff! (ha) My wife say's I'm just like a computer, she has to punch in the info! Cheers Alex. |
