I've always used permatex aviation stuff (little bottle with a brush fixed to the lid) dark brown sticky-as goop that doesnt seem to harden ever.

now i know that the leak that's causing me to take the new water pump out again is probably more to do with surface prep, or maybe wrong tension on the water pump bolts, but while i'm becoming an expert at radiator out in type stuff....

what gasket goo does everyone else use?

please don't just say Loctite either... last time i looked there was about 9870 different loctites! gimme a number too!

Honestly i really hate that stuff with a passion. If i pull something apart and its got that stuff on it, i'm not a happy chappy.

IMO most off the shelf goo/silicone etc works so long as it cures before the oil/coolant etc comes into contact with it.

Permatex (which I now think is Loctite) 3J non-hardening. It is very good.

Recently when I checked new water pump, there was a small but potentially troublesome blemish on the gasket face of it. 5 minutes with some wet & dry on a flat board with a hole in it (for the impeller) and it was perfect.

Silicone is terrible stuff. It can cause all sorts of headaches later on. If you ever screw a bolt into a blind hole full of silicone you may break the casting. It also causes havoc in oil pumps and relief valves.

The best thing about Permatex and sealants of similar type is that they don't harden and don't skin so they don't leak later on. If you use the right solvent they are very easy to clean up.

I use the Permatex/Loctite #3 aviation cement on the timing cover (in case it needs to come off), everything else (below the head) gets `Loctite 515 master gasket'.
It is designed for metal to metal sealing without a gasket, but works fine with gaskets too.
I used it on a timing cover once, then 30 mins later realised I'd left the oil slinger out. When I levered the cover back off, the gasket split down the middle. Like I said, it's bloody good stuff. Gearboxes don't leak any more.

I used the Mercury (you know out board engine maker) Quicksilver Perfect Seal Part # 92-342271 on recommendation of GR as being the best. You can get it from your nearest boat mechanic place. It only comes in a 473ml bottle though and you should toss it after 6 months from when you open it, so if you are a tightarse you might not want to fork out $50 for it for a small job. But I can guarantee it works. Not a single leak from any gasket face using this stuff.

This time around it was a little hard to find a supplier in NL so I got the Loctite 30517. It comes with a different number label on top in Dutch, but I pulled it off to get to the English one (lazy language skills I know). Don't know if it leaks yet, will let you know in a couple of weeks.

i use a permatex red silastic type gasket goo for the water pump and thermostat housing, otherwise the aviation goop for everything else.
