Post subject:  Idling problems

Hi Guys,

I recently got the mini back from the mechanic after having some work done including getting the steering rack rebuilt and converting the generator to an alternator.

I had my sister pick the mini up and keep it at her place until i was able to bring it back to my house. So today she brought it over for me and the first thing that I noticed is that is is idling unusually high. We're not talking screaming but high enough to notice, definitely not the low grumble you would expect at idle.

Also don't know if this is related but when i push in the clutch pedal there is feedback through the pedal and a noise coming from the engine.

Sorry for the lack of detail in my description but any help/advice on potential diagnostics would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to give my mechanic a call tomorrow but just want to get a few opinions on what it could be from you guys.

Many thanks

Dane

Hey dane, mate too vague, sounds like it could be 101 different things. Everything from really simple to not so simple. Who did you take it to? are they a mini specialist??

The high idle could be a leaking inlet manifold. They have to take the carbie(s) off to replace the steering rack.

The feeling you getting through the clutch pedal could be a thrust bearing on the way out or they may have removed the slave cylinder again to replace the steering rack and twisted up the hose to the slave in replacing it.

Hey Mate,

I took it to Darren Burns who is a great guy so I have no hesitation in giving him a call, was just hoping posting on here would help me to explain whats happening to him.

So it idles high when in neutral and the only time the rev's drop are during that brief second when I take off. As soon as i either put it into neutral or push the clutch in the rev's rise.

That's about as technical as my description can get i'm afraid.

Thanks

Dane

Darren from the MCC? Oh you'll have no problems he's the nicest guy.

LOL from your very vague description I can't help you!

The choke's not stuck open is it??

I'd be checking your accelerator and clutch linkages first. If the idle screw hasn't been changed, the accelerator might have been reattached partially on. Same with the choke.

Check that your jet isn't stuck - if the choke has been on, it can sometimes stick open - just reach in underneath and give it a push up.

Have you got a tach? I think a 998 or 1098 should be idling at about 1000rpm and a 1275 at 750 (I could be wrong).

If it is fitted with a PCV breather system it could be the oil cap is not on properly or the dip stick is not pushed all the way in. (I know it is a long shot but it is cheap to fix!)

Thanks for all your responses guys.

Just as an update I started him up yesterday to try and get a better description, this time it did the opposite. I Idled too low and almost stalled. Still making noise and giving feedback when supressing the clutch pedal.

I just spoke to Darren about it. I can not speak highly enough of this guy he is a legend! He is going to come out next week and have a look at it for me so I will keep you all posted.

Thanks

Dane

Hi Guys,

Just an update. Darren Burns came out to have a look at the Mini for me. Turns out the hose to the brake booster was busted and gushing out air. A new piece of hose and its all sorted. Also Clutch noise I was hearing is the bearing. im gonna get that fixed next week.
