Post subject:  What tyres should I be running on my long roadtrip to SA?

As many of you are aware im driving from QLD down to SA on the 12th of November and want people's opinion on what tyres i should be running.

I have either my new falken ZE912 tyres on 12inch wheels

or

my newish bridge stone tyres on 10inch wheels

I'm still not sure what would be the best for the distance and comfort?

Refer to my trip thread http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=64190 if your interesting in the details and what routes I am taking there and back. I'm stopping along the way in alot of places, to see friends and family, but I would also love to catch up with anyone on here as well if they are interested? Maybe even go on a run and show me around?? Oh and something that hasan't been mentioned in the other thread is, im doing it budget style, sleeping in the van the whole 1.5 weeks im away, as I can't afford hotels. Need to keep that money for the car, lol..

12inch wheels have less bounce in the tyre as the wall isan't as think, but then 10 inch has it's negatives as well...

10inch to me seems the go, for more comfort but what does people think?

Thanks in advance. :)

For such a loooong trip, the lower rpm at highway speeds that the 12" rims will give you would far outweigh the softer ride on the 10s.

Do you have 8.4inch discs at the front? if so there's no choice to be made

nope not on the van, I've got 7.5's. I've had both wheels on the car, no worries there. It's only bluey (my other car) that has 4 pot 8.4's on it

No they won't! The total circumference with 12's is almost identical to 10's, you're running lower profile rubber.

Go the 10's, they'll be more comfortable (and cheaper to replace ;) )

Either will be fine but you want 4 the same. Not a good idea to mix and match.

i did 15,000kms on Bridgestone 226's, and survived the entire oodnadatta without blowing a tyre until the last 50km's. Excellent long trip road/offroad tyre.

I bought eight more because they lasted so long. i still have the old ones as spares now, and they still have half tread or more.

I'd go 10's, personally.
Just cos its a nice round number.

Anybody else have a preference?

10's would probably give you a less harsh ride, which you would appreciate over that distance.

and 10's are cooler. 8)

10's for comfort and better resistance to sidewall damage from potholes.

Personally I'd go with the ones that have the most tread. But i'm also biased to the 10" wheels though

12's will give more ground clearance for the tow truck - someone had to say it

it ain't going on a tow truck if I can help it!! im spending 4 weeks from now, just replacing almost everything that moves if I can.. :)

Matt, aside from the 12's being brand new, the 10's that i would be putting on have heaps of tread on them...

Downsides to the 10's i can see is that they are not new, and got that nice stickiness to the road... and the rims that I have for them aren't flash at all compared to my 12inch mags
