Post subject: | Oil Pumps |
In with all of the bits and bobs hanging around my garage are several oil pumps from various engine rebuilds along the years from several people. Now, I know that as a matter of course, we all install a new pump when we do a rebuild - after all, they're only about $60 - but how do you check if these old pumps are scrap or worth re-using. I'm a bit dubious about the quality of parts, seals etc that we are getting lately, hence the question. |

To tell if they're any good you need to pull them apart, and visually check them as well as do some measurements. A lot of the older service manuals take you through the process and give you all the vital dimensions. If they've been used for any length of time in a mini engine they're likely to be internally scored from bits of crap sucked up from the gearbox.... ![]() cheers Jacob |

I used a s/h pump for my rebuild. 80psi pressure when cold, has been since day one. As Vulcan says, check for scouring on the pump drive and lobes, there should be no play in the drive assembly etc |

As said above. Any scoring or gouging, I'd bin it. With pin drive pumps, pay attention to the slot in the pin. Some recent pin drive pumps tend to crack those 2 ears off. |

I've bought a brand new one - I must look for the brand or something. Day later than when i posted the first line - well, there's no markings on the new pump. No country of origin or anything. |
