Hey fellow mini-ites

Havent had this issue before so asking around.

Decided to be proactive and cut my ignition leads as they were standard and way too long. Since cutting them the old girl wont kick in. :cry: You try to be proactive and you make it worse.

Anyway, i have checked the leads on the battery. All tight.
I have connected my car with jumper leads as i thought the battery maybe low.
I put a test light on the negative of the coil and earthed to block. Light flickers when ignition is turned.
Earthed 1 and 3 cylinder spark plug on block and there is a spark.
Rotor turns.

Any ideas??????

One think i have noticed is that it sounds like the starter motor has issues kicking in. Like a grinding sort of sound which stops the car from turning over. Sometimes engine turns over without grinding sound.

It maybe obvious guys but still learning heaps about these little cars.

If you have a multimeter, check that the leads still have no resistance (or very, very small anyway). It would be a bit of a coincidence if you cut your leads and something else suddenly went wrong.

But you can still check your fuel pump & filter, and the idle mixture and choke. But I'd be placing my bet on the leads still.

So, resistance all good. Spark on all cylinders.

Fuel in float bowl.

I realised that positive cable off battery is split and only half of the wires are on the clamp. Could this be it?

Also whiring on starter is almost every time now.

Sounds like you have a few problems.

The first thing I would do is find a good set of working leads (borrow, beg, buy, whatever).

Then, if you are still having problems getting a spark move further down the line.


As for the starter.
Is the motor turning over?
Try charging up the Battery as all this cranking over is bound to have drained it a bit.
Check the voltage as you try and crank it over. How much does it drop?

So are you now saying that you do not have an ignition problem? Have you fouled your plugs with all the winding over you have been doing?

Just a guess but maybe the leads are too well connected? Try pulling them slightly off the plugs so there is a small gap between the lead and the spark plug. I think that would be a temporary way of increasing resistence and making a stronger spark. I would check with others first though as even if it did work im not sure what the next step would be

what car is it?? Is it Jap Spec or old school??

My Jap Spec had similar issues and it was a shorted crank sensor which stopped everything working... Spark was good etc etc etc, but wouldnt start. Replaced sensor, right as rain.

OK. A little progress.

Pulled the starter motor out and :shock: what was meant to be a spring is now shavings and a set of washers. Not good. I see most people on the thread rebuild their starters motors but a new spring? Havent heard that yet.

Now i suppose i have a new problem, metal shavings throughout the bottom and possibly the top of the motor. Fair call? If so is there no way to clean the bottom end without pulling out the engine?

The `shavings' etc would be confined to the clutch housing. NOT in the gearbox. If you are worried, jack up the drivers side of the engine, remove the wok, and scrape under the flywheel with a coat hanger or similar. But I doubt there is anything loose in there.

Are your plugs fouled? If you remove a plug and rest it against the engine block do you see a spark when cranking?
