Hi everyone, i have a 1275ls so it has the big radiator - but its getting really hot! the timings right, the radiators been flushed, it has got an expansion tank, its got the right cap on it. Does anyone have any ideas on why it could be getting hot and what i can do about it? thanks |

Herman was running hot the other day because he was running lean. if you know how to richen the fuel/air mixture, give it a quarter turn and if it is lean, the revs would pick up a little |

the problem tends to be when im sitting at the lights mostly. when im driving its fine - but once it gets hot it stays hot and then gets hotter and hotter! im running a 40 DOCE webber and as it is i think its getting too much petrol (it spits a hell of a lot out the back). So i don't think it could be lean - unless the idler jet's are wrong? if that can be? |

well when driving before it gets hot its at just below the N on a clubby dash. when you're at the lights and its getting hot it goes right up to about 1mm before the H on the guage and thats when i shut the car off in fear - if not sooner! when you start driving again though it doesnt go back down unless its a really cool day. |

Change your thermostat!!!! Replace the gasket too. Mine was doing the same thing a week ago! At a piddly 10 - 15 bux to do, it's worth it. |

I am very sure thats what did the head gasket....and used up all my coolant...and all the oil... |

never overlook the basics.... rad cap, thermostat....or even faulty gauge. |

a little hijack here but still related. Viv runs really cold (well on cold days) it is just above the white cold line...does that matter (driving your car cold is bad aye?? |

Mine used to be EXACTLY the same..I got a new super 2 core radiator and it sits just below the N always now.. I wouldn't fear toooo much about the heat, mine had been up near the boiling line on a few occasions and it never did any harm, once it's up there, takes a while to get into the red, but it's best to shut it off.. Mine was worst when in the M5 Tunnel during peak hour, NO AIR, not moving and heat from all the other cars..needless to say, not good..and no where to go/park... |

hmmmmmm well the engine was only rebuilt 2 years ago and it had a new high capacity water pump and new thermostat when we rebuilt it. the thing which makes me feel its not the thermostat is that on say 25deg days whilst driving the temperature is perfect - until you stop! the big 1275ls radiator has the long throat neck on it and ive got the long neck cap so that should be right - just they don't have the rubber seal on them. and i know its overheating coz when it gets hot it blows coolant out of the cap (coz theres no rubber seal) - so it couldnt be the guage! my plan is to take the radiator out and take it to a place to swap necks for the short neck version so i can have a seal on the cap to make my overflow work better. whilst its out i was going to put a thermatic fan on it to see if that helps - anyone had any experience with them? thanks |
