Post subject:  hastings rings

I Just rebuilt my donk over the weekend, i want to ask what is the differance between the top and second piston ring in a hastings set, they measure and look the same. normally the second or third ring would be tapered but these are square
please explain

I used Hastings on my last build. It was on 4 ring pistons and the top 2 were square, the third had a groove on the lower edge i think, then a normal oil ring.

I always just go by the instructions on the packaging and have never had a problem

my pisotns just had 2 compression and 1 oil ring , so i ended up with 4 spare third grove rings , but like i said the top and third packet look and measure the same . can these be used in top ring grove

top ring is a rectanular section and a chrome compound.
second ring has a very small bevel on the inside. bevel upwards
third ring has either a bevel or a groove again upwards.
the bevels are to assist with ring sealing from gas pressure.
On the 2 ring pistons I fit top ring and the 3rd ring.

also very carefully check the oil rings as the ring sets do not fit all types of pistons. some pistons have a slightly wider[ heigth] ring groove and the hastings rings will be loose and consequently the thin rings on top and bottom can jump over the expander and not seal properly. This can happen as soon as you start up and the engine will burn oil.
If you have hypertec pistons then they are all 4 ring pistons [both large and small bore engines] and no problems with oil rings.

I've just put Hypertecs in my big bore and they are only 3 ring pistons

ditto...

I have a little collection of the leftover rings - various sizes now  can't bring myself to throw them away, but they're no good for anything

The only thing that stresses me out more than "Did I put those rings in the right way?" is "I wonder if I tightened those mains up?".

i used arp studs for the mains, found the thread bottomed out on the gearbox, so i removed the thick washer and trimed down the thread , clears by 1.8mm now
as for the top and second or lower compression ring, they are the same material and shape. all fitted with chamfer on inner ring pointing up.
