Just starting to notice Barney is pulling mostly to the left but sometimes to the right under initial braking. Quite noticeably. For mine there's a fair bit of brake dust on the rims too. Any early diagnoses?

Evan

When we bought the car it had Honda Civic discs on it.
I fitted Cooper S 7.5s because I had a set.
It had new caliper seals and EBC Blackstuff pads not long before we sold it.
It could be the hoses, I can't remember if I changed those.... :?

While it could be the brakes, don't overlook tyres (& pressures), suspension rubbers and steering rack.

Doc, if it was the hoses, would I see fluid? Everything looks dry as a bone.

No, when the hoses pack it in they don't burst, they swell inwards and fluid then has trouble getting through when you stand on it. If 1 hose only has the prob, it will dive to one side then straighten up. Usually...

Hose all the dust out, but if there's no fluid anywhere, the seals are still fine.

New hoses are cheap insurance...

My 1275LS had a similar issue many years ago, ended up being the castor rod bushes. they were buggered and were allowing the car to pull to one side as one arm moved more than the other under braking.

If it's only under initial (rather than hard) braking, I'd look at the rear drums.
It could simply be a matter of adjustment.

Another symptom is that it feels like the brakes are on (very slightly) when I'm backing it into the shed. You know when you have that feeling that the handbrake is on? Seems to coast to a stop just a little to quickly. Was thinking this may account for the mountains of brake dust I'm accumulating.

If the pads are rubbing all the time it's another indication that the hoses are restricting fluid flow.
The caliper seals flex the pistons back when pedal is released. So, the pads should sit slightly loose.

I would go with the hoses too.

You will notice I have non-standard pins holding the pads in.
This is because one day I was driving along, and A PAD FELL OUT. They had straightened or broken the flimsy POS Asian 3mm split pins.
Luckily I was going slow, as I had NO footbrake!!

1/8" x 3" real Oz split pins seem to be unobtainium in Oz, I drew a blank every fastener place I tried.

So, I used 2 bits of 1/8" steel welding electrode 80mm long, with the ends bent over. Much stronger.... no way these will fall out.
For comparison see the crap pin shown at the bottom...

Thanks everyone for the input. Quick question: how can I tell externally that the brake hoses are buggered. If they 'fail inwards' are there any tell tale signs apart from the behaviour under braking. I'm also noticing that if I keep my foot on the pedal, it will slowly push almost all the way to the floor.
