Post subject:  Blasting Steelies

I spoke to a soda blaster today, about blasting my steelies i'm about to pick up.

He said $25 a wheel, which seems fair to me.

The steelies have been chromed, but i want to powdercoat them black
He said that he can't really blast the chrome off, what flakes off is what flakes off and thats the best he can do?

Should i look at getting a more abrasive blast done, what have others done?

Why soda?
I know that my blaster would not use soda on chrome wheels. He would use something stronger. He uses soda, glass, poly, garnet, etc.

I got a set of chromed Van Bumper sand blasted the other month and all good. $25 per wheel is also what I paid. i haven't got my Business card folder on me but they are in Blacktown and they are good with Alloys wheels also

Oh, the only reason i rang the soda guy is because i was getting a quote for the moke.. and just asked about wheels at the same time.

He wanted $1200 for the moke shell :S

Oh, and is it the guys on romford road gaf?
I read one of your posts from a few years ago, you used the guys on romford road - Impact glass beading or something similar..

I'm also looking into getting my chromed wheels blasted and re-chromed.

What sort of media does everyone recommend using to get all the chrome off?

Claude at Impact Bead blasting can do your wheels (and sub-contract the powder-coating too if you want). Romford Place as you suggest.

I think it may be a bit more than $25 per wheel though. He'll use an abrasive grit. But ask first about chrome as I have a feeling it needs to be chemically stripped first. Garnet or glass beads may not do the job?

Yes, you might need to talk to an electroplater first..

yep Claude @ Impact. While I had the Chromed Bumpers blasted I also had 4 painted wheels blasted also for $150 total. Both the wheels & Bumpers came out the same way. Give him a call or drop in, He's a real nice guy and easy to talk to

forgive me if i'm wrong, my chemistry knowledge is a little rusty....

don't you have to "un-plate" a plated finish before any other process?

ie if you give something with dodgy chrome (or nickel or whatever) plating to an electroplater, they'll run the current through the items in reverse, all he chrome will leave the items and jump onto the electrode in the tub.

it's a win win. you get your chrome off and the electroplater picks up a bit of free chrome from you.....

anyone else heard of reverse (un) plating?
