What do you have to do to enter the Targa? Is it a typical case of have 10k aside or forget it? I'd LOVE to do it one day..

it cost me $15K back in 2002 we can do it for far less next time tho,,, we also have (at the ready) a couple of sponsors wanting to throw cash our way if we did decide to do it again,,, so that helps heaps if you can get some decent sponsors it`s one of the most fun things i`ve ever done in a car , (there are "other" things more fun) it would probably pay you to go down for a look one year,,, just trundle around watching the event & see how it all works ,,, & you can drive the sections after they`re open to traffic,, it will give you an idea of how big the event really is. dot all your "i"`s & cross all your "T"`s before you enter tho,,, make sure "EVERYTHING" is top knotch on the car & i`d also suggest some physical training for at least 3 mnths before you go,,, it`s pretty tiring event... bit like ground hog day--> wake up, suiton, grab helmet, go to car, wait for number to be called, drive off,,, drive all day, shower, go to sleep (if you can get some sleep that also helps) then wake up, suit on, grab helmet, go to car, wait for number to be called, drive all day.... you get the picture??? oh!!!!! & maybe change brake pads & re-grease wheel brgs half way through the event i didn`t & they were all absolutely & totally stuffed on the last day (they were Brand new one week before we left)

One of those "bucket list" things... They tightenend up entry requirements a few years back after some issues.... but may have relaxed again not sure... If competed in 6 targa tasmania's and I wish they only ever costed me $10-15k, it's a great event and has the highest of highs and has some serious lows, it's extreamy dangerous in any car ! I've seen cars litterally do 500 meters and the event is over after spending so much money..... I've started and finished all 6 events, I know guys who have attempted 5 and still yet to finish one ..... Approach with caution

Does it change ownership often or something? It is so hard to get the full history of entrants and results. The web site is full of sales stuff to get you to sign up but doesn't give much in the way of history. M

I finally did it last year after 10 years of competing in Rally Tasmania - which is a cheaper 3-day version of the Targa based around Burnie in Tassie's NW. It truely is a fabulous event that is well worth the effort and expense. We were lucky enough to be offered the shared use of another team's support crew, who carried our spares (which were never used ) and some fuel. But, I can't tell you what it cost us - I stopped counting when it got close to $10,000 - The entry fee alone was $6000 I agree with what the others have said - thorough preparation (car and team) is the key, together with an undertstanding that to do well you really do need to finish every stage and every day without incident. I too know of several competitors who only managed to complete Day 1, and 1 team that even crashed out on the Prologue - and there's no refunds I would recommend doing one of the shorter tarmac events before trying Targa. You'll get the hang of the way they are run, sort the car out properly and probably be even more convinced that you want to try Targa no matter what the cost.

I know a fellow who races a mazda Rx7 in Targa and has previously raced there in an Mx5; and Renault spider(s). He is tied in with a mob who lease MX5's for the event. Google redback racing for details, but yeah I'd say 10-15k min is required whichever way you approach it.

Ah----->,,, to finish first,,, first you must finish i expect out "Team" spent the very least ever on a Targa Tassie event you can read my "Targa Tassie Report" on the Targa Tassie web site (or at least it used to be there That place can bite you,,, & bite hard if/when it does,,, be prepared,,, be very prepared!!!!! I think we were simply incredibly lucky to be honest

NMP built a number of Targa minis and I was lucky enough to be one of the 2 mechanics for Henry Drapers car, as part of the "Mini Targa Team",Henrys 850, Sids S, Rogers 997, the Docs S etc. Travelling around in the back of the Hilux chasing the cars was great fun & the nights allways consisted of many beers & great storys over great pub meals. Would do it again in a heartbeat. I have lots of Photos but there all 35mm so Ill scan a few and post them.

the cost of building the car then some alcohol the entry fee some more alcohol fuel costs (getting there & back,,, & racing,,, & the service car too) a lot more alcohol accomodation & food extra alcohol & then the extras like photos, videos, party tickets, & another bundle of alcohol & then there`s also a small cost for the alcohol you may consume throughout the proceedings oh,,, & then """IF""" you stuff the car into a bank or tree or rock,,, that`d cost some more

So you can factor in the cost of a couple of return air fares to Launceston, a hire car for 3 days, petrol, accommodation, meals etc. The alternative is to purchase pace notes (quite expensive) or do the event on the safety notes provided which are good at pointing out hazardous situations, but nowhere near as good as having a full set of notes. Small things add up as well - there was a towing surcharge (to have a salvage vehicles on standby if required) Car washes each night - costs went to charities Memorabilia etc. Here's a shot inside the Silverdome at Launceston - the event headquarters and an awesome place when filled with a few hundred rally cars. One or more of the MX5s in front of the our Fiat 124 Coupe are the lease cars mentioned by 1310/71.

a couple of guys from my local club just competed in the Targa High Country, and they had an awesome time. Apparently the organisers are a bit worried that it'll get bigger than Targa Tas funnily enough, both of their cars are featured in this video - the blue evo at the start, and the last ummmmm "car" shown http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iUk-X34tPs
