| Post subject: | Removing 850/wand engine- what's easiest. |
Greetings all. Gotta pull it out again. Last time I lifted body away from front end. Will the rear clear easily if I just yank the motor/box up. I have removed radiator and dist. Is there a preferable set of bolts to get a suitable angle with my hoist chain? Would like to leave carbies on too. Alex. |

Thanks Morris 1100. My first time was lift body straight up, but was very hard lining it up when refitting. One thing which I did find handy was a bracket I made to grab the front. Thanks for response. Alex. |

This is how I lifted my motor... 
I did take the carbies off but that was so I could disconnect the extractors otherwise I would have left them. My bracket has no welding. I have seen people weld cast or forged D shackles to a bit of angle but I prefer to just knock a hole in the angle. |

Thanks again Morris 1100. Now that looks better. I recon I'll try that this time. The only bit I think I'll have to "jiggle" will be the gear box extended bit. I've got a pit so U bolts on shaftes will be reasonably easy. I want to leave the grill in because that was an absolute Ba%4ted to get just right. The "Mo" was an after market and the fit was shocking. A lot of twisting and sweezing to get a good fit. Cheers Alex. |

The trick is the engine lifting bracket is forward of the centre of gravity. As you lift it tilts to clear the extension housing. My bracket could probably use another inch or two more to tilt it further. It is probably a mistake to have the car on stands like I did in my photo. That tilts the car back so you need to tilt the motor more. |

I was a bit under-equipped last time I pulled an engine (in a hired storage shed during my lunch hour). In desperation I put the shackle off my tow bar through the hole in the generator bracket . It worked like a dream, it tilted the engine right back so that the socket for the pudding stirrer was well down (its an 850) and it came out and went back in like a beauty. Next time I'll make up a proper bracket that allows me to lift fom that position. As an aside, I'm working on the engine from my sidevalve Morris J Type van. Its recommended to lift it from two hooks screwed into the spark plug holes. Tim |
