Post subject:  camshaft end float
Just put a camshaft,new oil pump and new duplex timing sprockets how much end float should there be on it with, new sprocket on it I get 16 thou old one I get 6 thou I presume I will need to set new one up in my lathe and machine it down but is 6 thou right or should it be less makes it difficult for lining up sprockets

There is no presibed end float on the camshaft.

The lobes are ground (or should be!) such they they are not parallel to the shaft centre line but slightly tapered - all the same way - so the Cam actually thrusts in to the cam thrust plate (funny 'bout that!) as it rotates.

Did you replace the triangular thrust plate? They do wear, the coating is whitemetal.
Maybe it is a bit worn and someone machined the old sprocket to compensate.
Karcraft and Minis Plus both stock the plate.

I aim for about .005" end float when assembled on the cam.

Replaced that to I even put a very good old one on it comes up with the same amount of end play might just skim it on the lathe

Remember these `new' duplex timing sprockets are all aftermarket and made God knows where now. Probably made off a sample.
They would not be privy to a BMC/Leyland/Rover component drawing. :wink:
