Post subject:  missing when accelerating
mine was missing a bit this morning, fine when at constant speed, but missing when accelerating - a slight miss on gentle acceleration, more pronounced at wider throttle openings, and not at high RPM

just ignore any thoughts that it could be ignition... assume it's carb only - what could cause it?

nope... you may be on the right track

In my case usually because all 4 spark plugs are completely fouled up :lol:

you cant ignore the ignition,

check fouled plugs, check rotor and cap, check leads. Check your Dizzy Timing 5degrees to 10degrees.

then check leaks in the exhaust manifold gasket, check leaks on the carby gaskets, check your dashpot oil.

check carby is getting enough fuel, fuel float is ok, lines arent clogged.

then check your fuel mixture, if its to rich it will be wetting and misfiring, if its to lean it will be starving and stumbling.

check the needle and jet make sure its not clogged with speck of dirt or something.

set the idle for the fuel mixture and go go go.

and if your in the outback try not to use that OPAL crap.

Dashpot oil? Haven't you been playing with it? If you are cruising the piston is constant. If you are accelearing your piston is moving, it is either moving too quick or too slow. So it may be your dashpot oil is too thick or too thin for the blower setup.

Re your electrics, I know you have electronic ignition, but you might want to check the coil pack. I had one go on my flacon and it had a similar sympton at first. Just an idea.

Try a new fuel filter and a new Red spring ( I,m assuming your using an SU or two with a Red spring ) I,m basing a new spring on the fact that your more likely to have the motor up past 7,000 on a regular basis which would stretch it over time.

In contrast to my tongue-in-cheek comment above: If it's too rich on initial throttle, the oil is too thick (piston rising slowly, admitting more fuel but proportionally less air).. if it's too lean, the oil is too thin (vice-versa). If choke makes it worse rather than better, I'd lean towards too-rich..

But you knew this already... ;)

yeah, OK, maybe I can't ignore my ignition... I don't have a rotor, cap or distributor for them to be installed in ;) but I'll look at the plugs... they could well be sooty. I need to check the trigger wheel sensor mounting as well. Interesting thought on the coil-pack Aaron

I've been dicking around with springs and oils to get it accelerating nicely, and I thought I had it pretty right last week, but started missing today. It's not the bogging down or hesitation caused by the wrong oil, but a distinct "miss" two or three times as it picks up

That's what my car started doing on the weekend, plugs were well fouled up. Swapped the E3 needle to and H6, changed the plugs and it's been fine.

Actually, it could easily be the fuel -- mine was doing something very similar a couple of weeks ago, it's cleared up since refuelling. In my case, it was a very definite "hard" misfire -- felt more like a lack of spark than fuel, but with my 123 dizzy it was unlikely to be ignition.
