ive only recently aquired this mini and was told it has a 1380 in it. it sure aint a std 1275 because its very quick so a 1380 would fit
but
i have a loud whine from the engine when im powering along. sounds like a supercharger. the whine softens when i back off the power but is still there. there is no whine when the clutch is in.
i'm not sure if theres some sort of straight cut gears in the box or i'm just looking at worn idler gear thrusts.

any ideas?

If it's in ALL gears including 4th and varies with RPM in each gear I'd say it's probably got straight cut drop gears in it.

yes it is in all gears and does vary with revs.

now another question for you.

when its sitting in neutral just idling ive got a bad rattle up the front. the rattle disappears when i put my foot on the clutch.

any ideas?

and now another question about the g/box.

if i change up gears quickely it ALWAYS crunches. every gear. but if i change up slowely it doesnt crunch. in any gear.
but
changing down gears is fine. doesnt matter how fast i change down or what gear i change to it wont crunch,

any ideas?

all the other g/boxes ive had with dodgy synchros, it would crunch when i change down gears as well as up gears.

i'm putting my money on a worn g/box but has anyone else had this problem?

That only works on French cars, and depends on the colour of the wine. Red, White or Rose?
