What should i have my clutch lever clearance set at?

7 thou or 20 thou? or other?

i have the early pre-verto setup, miniman lightened and balanced 2 piece flywheel, blue dot diaphram and coopers s clutch plate. i went to alot of trouble to make sure the whole setup was spot on when i fitted it.

the reason i ask, is i feel i have to push the clutch pedal hard to the floor with quite a lot of pressure to make smooth gearshifts. mostly in first gear it quite often feels harder to put into gear than it should be.

the lever, plunger, bearing, spring etc are all brand new, done about 1000 miles on it now.

i curently have the lever clearance set at 20 thou. should it be less? and will this help slightly or not with the disengagment?

If it's that close to the bottom then 13 thou won't make much difference.

What bore size M/C do you have and have you checked all the clevis pins (including the one on the M/C)?

Have you got that stupid shim under the M/C?

i am not sure if there is a shim under the M/C.

yes all the pins are brand new bar the one on the pedal itself. not sure what bore size the slave is, but was working fine before i rebuilt the clutch.

so reducing the clearance wont disengage the clutch a slight amount more?

Hard to tell form this pic, but with the spring removed, i measured 20 thou clearance at the lever. then refitted the spring.

Looking at yr pic it appears that the arm is too up right. Might need to take the wok off and check the bearing, maybe put a washer behind it. Also check the hole in the plunger (bearing carrier) the the ball on the arm goes in to is not worn.

the bearing carrier (plunger) is brand new.

i have heard of putting a washer behind the bearing. maybe i should give that a go. what size washer should i try, any suggestions?

7..20 whatever the odd 13 thou won't make THAT much difference. If you're having problems less is better but you do need *some* clearance.

I don't hink the angle of the lever would affect things much - in theory, vertical would be better.

When you rebuilt the clutch , did you check the hole in end of the slave (the one the clevis pin goes through). I've seen people fit a new pin and then wonder why the 4 or 5 mils of slop in the slave push rod is having so much effect.

Cheers, Ian

ok so your talking about the fit of the pin into the shaft out of the slave?

should it be a tight fit?

i will have to remove it this weekend and have a look at it. from memory it did fit up nice. but thats a good place to check first.

thanks

it actually shifts nice in 2nd 3rd and forth while your moving, but engaging first when stopped, or shifting out of a gear on the downshift seems to be stiffer and you need to push slightly harder on the pedal when all the way down, to get that little bit more to disengage it.

i dont think its a major thing, just an adjustment or something not quite right.

Usually about 1.0 to 1.2mm gets the job done. Ideally you want it set so that at 50% of arm travel the small section of the arm with the ball on it is at 90 deg to the plunger.

From yr pic it looks like the section of the arm is at about that angle at rest, so as it moves from this point, it is loosing effective travel.

Is the washer only necessary because of the new thrust bearing having a different face to the original? Is the washer necessary all the time? I had my mini mechanic press the new bearing onto the new carrier for me and he didn't think I would need a washer. I am now wondering if that is why I am having trouble adjusting my clutch? Thanks for any advice.

And put the clutch overthrow nuts back on while you're at it. Cheap insurance.
