hi everyone,

am trying to remove the LH fuel tank from my 65 Deluxe and after wrestling with it for 3 hours last night, i need a little assistance

i have removed the rubber bung from around the filler neck, fuel line disconnected, strap removed and the tank is moving around, but the drain plug is fouling on the floor and i cant get it past it.

the drain plug is next to impossible to remove, the nut is rounded pretty bad from a previous attempt and as the pipe is quite long comming off it, it fouls on the floor and i cant seem to lift the tank high enough in the boot cavity to get it through.

to get at the drain plug it looks like i may have to drop the rear subframe out of the car, and cut it off somehow.

any tips?

Hey Jason,

From my previous times in taking my tanks out, you shouldn't have to take the plug out. It is a bit of a struggle sometimes, and it's sorta a juggling act, but its quite do-able. Without actually being there and doing it myself, from memory (this probably wont help but I'll try) the tank filler neck must first be out of the hole in the car, then you slightly swivel the back around, and twist it up and out. If it helps I would take the rear tail light out first so not to damage the wires or terminals like I have once before.. Everyone would have their own way of getting it out, but from my experience it's just a juggling act kinda thing. Patience is the key mate

edit, i have a feeling there is something underneath like a rubber or bung thing that has to be pulled out to allow more movement... I can't remember off the top of my head. I would know once I see it though... (I'm a visual person )

I've snapped the big long tube off before to make it easier

On my Mk1's, there is no way the tanks will come out unless you take out the drain tube. I made a special long socket, 1/2" AF single hex and I reach up behind the subframe.

i got a set of wire cutters and cut the drain plug in half. if i need to drain it i will put a tube over the whole thing so it wont matter

Next time mine is out it's getting a grub screw + Loctite put in it.
If a drain is needed, how come the RH tanks don't have em..

Because the fuel runs from the right tank to the drain in the left tank anyway.

Meh- I just plug the outlet with a kinked bit of hose. Or drain it first at the electric pump...
