Post subject: | engine questions |
Hey guys I recently pulled out the 998 from the clubby.... Its been sitting on a piece of old carpet on the garage floor for round 4 months. Reason being I don't know which holes to mount the thing from on an engine stand....... I'm happy to weld up a bracket of course because the original plate hasn't got the right holes. Can someone please give me some clear direction on this?? Also just a noobie question... am i better off leaving the oil in the donk while its sitting doing nothing??? or drain it???? Cheers Hoba |

Here's mine- I bolt it to the oil filter mount as well as the 2 alternator bosses (which are flimsy and could break). If the oil is real dirty I would drain it. The acids in it can etch (corrode) the gearbox bearings where the balls and rollers run. If you are going to keep it sitting for years though I would put fresh (cheap) oil in it. |

thanks guys how thicker tube metal did you use?? And the alternator bosses flimsy and could break?? They'll be fine if the oil filter mounts are used to right?? Thanks for the advice Hoba |

Many people do just bolt to the alternator bosses on the block. However when you are torquing the flywheel to 120lb/ft it puts a lot of stress on them. They are only grey cast iron, it is brittle stuff. That tube is just a bit of water pipe, I offset the bracket like this so that it's reasonably balanced, and can swing over 360° to allow the gearbox to be dropped on with the motor upside down (it's easier). |

I used the mounting plate that came with my engine stand and cut it down with an angle grinder to suit. ![]() i used very hi tensile bolts and made sure i was careful with it. i did not mount the gearbox on the engine while on the stand and only tightened the flywheel and crank bolts when the engine was on the floor. personal choice. |

thanks for the replies people, I got all the stuff i need to make one like dr mini's then realised that to mount it like that the oil needs to be drained and can't be refilled till it comes of the stand ![]() i might just leave it sitting on the floor for the moment then..... Probably not good for it hanging of an engine stand from those bolts with a gearbox on it for an extended period of time anyway. |

On the above post has anyone got a way of mounting the engine on the stand with oil in it.... without just using the alternator bosses by themselves.... Cheers Hoba |

![]() Why? - oil goes in top - comes out the bottom - no where near the stand |

He means because it bolts into the oil filter location - as per Dr Mini's version. But it shouldn't leak any more than a hundred mL. --- all the oil should be in the gearbox! |

I can fill mine with oil on the stand, then hook the hoist onto the head lifting bracket, take engine stand off it, refit oil filter assembly. Oil won't run out of the filter mount as you fill it... it has to go through the filter to get up in there. ![]() |
