Hey Guys, I thought I had solved the over heating issues on my van but it seems not. I replaced the crappy 8 lb cap with a new 13 lb cap. The one designed for radiator even.. Did a test warm up in the garage to see what's happening. Got it up to about 90 degrees and all seemed to be going well. Did this a few times, no water expelled. I then drove it to work today to see what would happen. the first strange thing was my davies craig thermo fan started kicking in at about 70 degree's (I thought the highest was 90). This was with the dial turned right up. Temp sat just below 80 for ages and I was happy. I pulled the cable from the thermo controller as I was worried it would burn out. Kept going and got stuck in some traffic. Was manually working the thermo fan when it got hot and then it just stopped (the thermo fan). The car got up to about 90 degree's and sat here. I am a worrier so was loosing my stuff at this point. It started making a loud whistling noise from the radiator ( I think cap but could not feel anything) Im really not sure what is going on so I am taking it to my mini friendly mechanic tomorrow so he can have a look and try and work it out. I have replaced thermostat Thermostat gasket Rad cap hoses I have had the radiator cleaned out by a rad place as well. David water pump ( got the good one |

Hey Hanra, its the 82 degree the whistling is what freaks me out. Maybe it is not seating properly. Im not sure as it looks fine. D |

did you buy a Tridon radiator cap or a CPC? if you bought a Tridon, take it to a shop that sells the CPC ones and compare it with a 517-13, and see what the spring length difference is http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42245 |

hey Gaf Its got a webber, not sure of the carb. Will get it pressure tested tomorrow, also get them to use a sniffer to make sure nothing is causing exhaust into water jacket and making it more pressurised than needed. Will let you guys know what he thinks. David |

No idea about the whistle noise, but Im happy when mine runs at 90 deg. Maybe check your timing to! But temp wise I never stress at that temp. |

Thanks Gafmo, I will get the guy to look. I want to sort it myself but am not finding enough hours in the day, work is killing me, trying to get some side projects off the ground and I need this fixed so I can get it home. Can only leave it in the work garage for so long hey

Hey guys, good and bad news good news is that the sniffer didn't detect any exhaust gases in the radiator. and the pressure test on the radiator was good. Bad news is that the mechanic said that the thermostat in the engine seems to be registering at 70 or so when the radiator is actually boiling. He seems to think that a blockage in the radiator or motor might be occuring and causing this. He also thought I might have the thermostat in upside down. I am going to pull the rad out when I get home and get him to have it cleaned. I was thinking maybe chuck in a chinese alloy instead as that would be cheaper. I will also take off the thermostat housing again and check. I am 99% sure it is the right way up but lets have a look and see. I am pretty stupid sometimes. D |

Probably a good idea to test your thermostat too, in case it's not opening at the right temp. If you have a kitchen thermometer, stick the 'stat in a pot of water on the stove and measure the temp at which it opens. It's surprising how far out they are sometimes
