I started her up ready for a short run to my friend's place 10 mins up the road. After warming up I drove her to the lights 50 metres up my street where it was red.

I stop and the engine starts to make funny spluttering noises and lose rpm. Then i smell fuel... lots of it! The next word out of my mouth started with F!

So I turned the engine off and rolled her backwards to the curb and sure enough fuel was dripping out from the engine bay!

Turns out the there was a small split in the hose from the higher side of the fuel pump (after the pump) and was gushing out fuel when the pump was oe!

I am so lucky that Lillee wasn't hot enough to ignite it or anything! geez...

Well my pal came over and pushed her back home and i fixed it all tonight. That's it, no more holding off this electric fuel pump mod! It's got to go in sooner rather than later, along with all new fuel lines and hoses...

First time ever I thought about having to use my fire extinguisher... not a nice thought!

Trust me the F word was not Fuel!

I backed it up into a driveway where there was a slight tilt to one side and about 2 litres of fuel just gushed out of the hose!

Needless to say I fixed it all nicely, but it required the full hose replacement, sooner rather than later!

An electric one will just keep pumping whilst ever the ignition is on. At least your mechanical one would slow down as the engine revs did. Sounds like the hoses were at fault more so than the pump. Better check them all Chong! If you need easy access to the underside of your car, I have a set of drive on ramps, that lifts the car about half a metre or so off the ground (full length, not just the ones you drive one end up on).

LOL! I remember a similar sort of scary experience. I was driving up to the set of lights like you, when smoke started coming out from the bonnet. Sure enough, the F-word was said. I hopped out, opened the bonnet, waved my hand to push past the smoke.... and then realised that it was just a bit of spray-on lubricant that I had used just before I hopped into the car. Some of it must have spattered onto the extractors, so when it heats up...

You know that feeling when your heart finally slides back down to where it's meant to be after a severe panic attack? Yeah... That.

Actually Kev it's the way the hoses are connected to the mechanical fuel pump, it's dodgey to say the least!

I cleaned it up good. The hoses are quite newish looking, it was just the connection! DODGEY!

Well it's all good now that I spent this arvo redoing it all... It's not a fun job actually...
