Post subject:  Roof aerial removal/installation
Is it possible to remove/install a standard centre roof mounted aerial on Mini without removing the windows and headlining? I'm on the assembly stage of a project of mine and need to make sure I don't do things out of order too much.

My answer to this would be no, but maybe someone else has a bright idea.

The very least I could see you having to do is get a prtion of the hoodlining out from under the windscreen rudder so you could get to the nut holding the aerial on.

I faced this same problem recently when my roof had to get repainted, we just masked it up as any other conceivably way was a pain in the a..e

Yeah I thought no would be likely be the case. I wondered if it were possible to install the headlining and windows on my car, then later I could 'pop' some of the hoops of the headlining out in order to get up in there and attach the aerial.

My dilemma is that I want to put a new vinyl roof on my car as the car had one originally and due to the dents and huge amount of rust I've welded it would look best if I replaced it. I don't have a new vinyl roof yet and haven't found the old one (I don't even know if I have the old one) to make a pattern from and the aerial can't go in until the vinyl is on, but I can't put the windows in the car until the headlining is done. Basically I don't want to get ahead of myself and have to repeat work.

The factory fitted aerial on the 1275LS they had a little cover plate mounted under the inside mirror mount to access the aerial bolt which was just behind the mirror. So you could change the aerial without touching the headlining.

I don't know if they did that on the SS and the LS though.

Sure you could undo the bolt but how could you remove it, the cable goes through the roof space to go down the A pillar.

edit: I think I've just had an epiphany, the cable bolts on as well doesn't it :?:

Bingo. (Or at least I think so. It was 1988 when I last had one apart. :lol: )
How come I can remember the year but I can't picture what the aerial looks like. :?

From a dim memory the cable has a banjo like fitting and the aerial pokes through the roof and the cable banjo and then a nut and washer hold it together.

Thanks very much for the help guys!

I searched the shed and found the aerial and the old headlining. The old headlinig has a slit/hole cut where the aerail slots into the roof. Under that slit/hole is a flat piece of steel with a hole in the centre (presumably for a grommet or similar) which is also the mirror mount and spot welded to the roof. The cable would attach to the bottom of the aerial, altogether meaning that an aerial is replacable without touching the headlining.

I'll probably still try and assemble the car in this order: Vinyl roof, aerial, wiring/cable (also wiring for interior lamp), headlining, windows.

But I now know that the aerial can be left 'till later with the vinyl roof!
