Hi, my old speedo has crapped itself a while ago and its now time to get a new one for rego! I was wodering if anybody has managed to fit an electric one like a Autometer or VDO for example, and how they managed to do so 
I called some local speedo mechanic's but they were no help. Cheers in advance. |

Have you thought of getting a new clubman speedo and sticking it in? Suzispares in seven hills (who do suzuki and mini spares) have a bucket full of 2 and 3guage clusters. (none of them were GT ones, i looked already  )

Hi, Yeah, I have it working, but not reliably yet. I get needle bounce with the NEW speedo. 
I think my speedo cable is shagged and as the electronic sensor is at the dashboard end of the cable, it sends false readings. Also, I'm not real happy with the bodgy way I have attached it to the cable. I might make up a cable outer with a VDO end. Hence why I haven't been bothered changing the speedo cable yet. |

Brett, are you not able to fit the pick-up directly to the speedo take off (or somewhere else) on the gearbox? |

Yes, you could adapt something to fit the gearbox. In Mini Magazine Dec 2010, on P82 there is actually a speed spesor that bolts to a Mini gearbox for GBP34.95 available on www.vmaxbitz.com . It is designed to interface to Koso branded gauges. I e-mailed them and asked if it would interface to a VDO speedo, or if they had a wiring diagram for the sensor. Apparently they had neither. Another option is to mount a pickup on the gearbox and put a magnet on a pot joint. However, I really want to avoid having a sensor that bolts directly to gearbox, because it's a pretty harsh environment down there. Heat from the extractors and radiator and potential damage from oil leaks and water ingress concerned me. Hence I sought out a solution that would mount at the dashboard end of the speedo cable. I bought a GM sensor part number 90148828 on eBay for about $20USD plus shipping. It is standard on some crap Chevy van or maybe it was a Daewoo? It's actually a VDO part and places like HOward Instruments sell it with a myriad of universal fittings supplied as a kit. The mini inner cable fits into the sensor no problem, but the thread is standard VDO screw on type - larger than a Mini. I bodged mine together using part of a trailer plug which I had lying around. Next time I'm at pinch-a-part I'll find a VDO cable from a VW/Audi etc to adapt. In case anyone is interested, the GM 90148828 Speed Sensor wiring (at sensor plug) is as follows: 12V+ or Terminal 2 on VDO speedo - Black Signal to speedo or terminal 6 and 8 on VDO - Blue/Red Trace Earth - Brown Cheers, Brett. |

I know someone quite well that can make a speedo cable with the mini bottom end 3.8mm and the holden top end 7/8 x 18 & 3.2mm to suit the abovementioned sender. The same person can restore an original mini speedo.He (I) was mentioned in the above post and has a couple of mini's in the shed as a reference :D |
