Post subject:  Don't you hate it when...
Your driving home from work, and the clutch decides to poop itself and then the timing chain becomes so slack its causing the motor to keep un even revs and speed... :twisted:

Had this encourter yesterday in very heavy peak hr traffic on the highway 80km from home, (not the first time it's happened) but yes lets just say it was less short of fun...

For those who know me well on here, they know I don't have much for patience and get pissed off easily...

Well I had that many totes from people wen they could c I was struggling and bashing around trying to get it in gear and all sorts tryiong to get me to hurry up, and by the end of it I was ever ever so close to some bad road rage,, and some lovely finger guessgures.. :evil: Though I kept my calm pretty well considering, but I think I've taken half my gbox with me, and managed to piss off every aussie driver who thinks they know how to drive like hooligans... :x

no big deal really mate, its a 30yr old plus car... and it gets driven 100km plus everyday, so u gotta expect some wear and tare.. I knew it was on it's way out.. got all the spare bits here to replace it with, just was coaching it along..

I let me father drive one of my mini's (this one) the other day, and he managed to crunch every gear, and was as jerky as a learner, (his used to fuel injection) not a carby fueled engine and yea we were all ova the shop.. the engine steadys & timing chain couldn't handle the jerky ride, and by jerky I mean it was jerky!!! it was embarrassing... it was just the last straw for it all..

no biggy really.. can do all that stuff myself :)..

I'd be guessing it's more a problem of it's age and not being cared for throughout the 30+ years it's been around. I bought my 998 mini for a bit more than most people would, because it had an extensive service history and a long list of replacement parts. Two years on and about 20k km, the only breakdown I've had was my alternator breaking. I bought the new one from you Convertible Mini - it's in now and working perfectly.

I do have friends with minis who have not been as lucky as me. It's usually because they buy their mini from someone who only has it serviced when something goes wrong, so the list of worn parts builds up over 30 years.

I let my father drive the mini a while back - he stalled it three times in a row on starting. :D :D

Have you always got something negative to say about me Tony?

If it hasan't occurred to you, It comes down to the fact that not all of us have the money to repair and replace everything at once, (I am a full time uni student living out of home) and can't afford to replace things like this until the budget allows. So this may mean replacing the raditior one week, then only having to pull the radiator out again the following weekend to replace the timing chain or water pump.. There is no choice in the matter, when you need the car for work, and uni EVERYDAY, that's just the way it goes. It really doesn't bother me either, but it bothers me with comment's like this all the time.

I know many other people on here were once in the spot I am in, some of the stories I have heard you wouldn't approve of one bit. Fact of the matter is, they wont post for the reasons of being attacked just like this. Were all here to be a FRIENDLY bunch of mini fanatics, but sometimes I wonder..

I'm not saying anything further to this matter, I think I've made my point.

I've been in that situation as a uni student, always trying to fix the mini as a problem came up.

Here is what I learned:
- Minis (old cars) are expensive and uni students have no money.
- It is more expensive (time and dollars) to be fixing problems only as they arise. This is just a band aid solution (for me it was the only option I thought I had).

I eventually took the mini off the road for 18mnts and bought an excel as a commuter. I used the 18mnts to rebuild the motor, change all the rubbers in the suspension, re-do the brakes and just generally get the mini up to a great standard. It was much cheaper and easier then doing jobs as they came up and the end result has been a year of hassle free driving. Regular services and safety checks by myself (and once by the mechanic) has ensured that the car continues to stay in great shape. At the end of the 18mnts I sold the excel for $200 more then I paid for it.

You obviously love working on the cars. keep it up.

Yep I completely agree here Ryan. My last mini I did just that. Had only just got everything running perfect, and back on the road, then the day it was back on the road, I was involved in a HIT and Run accident, to whom they didn't stop. Wrote my car off and I have been left with nothing. Now I'm paying off a loan for my new mini, and just having to do it while on the road, as I said, it doesn't really bother me, as I do have other cars and another mini I can drive if I really really need to if it comes to the crunch, but I can't use them for work. Unfortunately for work I have to have a van, or ute, and something suitable for the km's I do, and my father and I looked into it, and it was going to be just as expensive as another mini for a heavy ute so hence that's why I have gone down this road again.

For me I get enjoyment out of it all, and at the end of the day I'm learning more and more about my mini's. :)

The lady that owned my car previously, has never opened the bonnet, and the oil was black as black and full of grit, air filter was caked solid shut, so the previous owner never helped the situation of keeping it alive well and healthy.. so no surprise to me.

Thats fair enough. If it was me (and its not) I would have gotten something a little more modern and reliable for work use until you have the time and money to do up a mini again. Otherwise you will forever be chasing your tail and paying a high price for it.

But.....I do understand the want of having a mini over a modern car.

this is explained in the accident thread.. anyway straying from topic..

my insurance wouldn't cover me for what I could get in bits at least,, because it was hit and run, the other insurance person (who the police think were drunk) would've been the ones to cough up. Didn't surprise me either, I wasn't with Shannons like my other cars, they are the ones to be with if you want to be sure for real value no matter what.. but for the rust it had in the shell, it just wasn't worth it for full comp. Others agree with me who have seen it in person, it just wasn't worth bothering, only for me into others was I concerned about.

:lol: :lol: Ryan, I love your thoughts. I would too mate, if I had the money to begin with to purchase. Then again I am in no mind to doing up another mini again, this is just a daily. nothing meant to be special at all by any means. I've done my full resto on my other mini, and well the latest mini is just a run around.. if it breaks it breaks.. i fix it myself and keep going.. its the inial cost that makes and breaks, that I'm sure you can imagine that I just don't have nor can get hold of. Unfortunately that's the way it goes.. Life can be a pain sometimes, but that's how it goes I guess..

I'm more than half way now.. been there 3 yrs now. Got just under 2 left :)
