I am thinking about fitting disks, do I need to fit a booster? The drum brakes need plenty of pedal pressure to stop, surely the disks can't be worse.

Nope. I prefer my brakes without a booster!

I think the general consensus is no booster with 8.4 inch discs, but use a booster with the 7.5.

Having said that, there are plenty of people who use no booster with the 7.5, because they don't like the mushy feel. It's really up to your preference. If you're going with 7.5's, put the discs in first, and if it's too firm, stick a booster in.

I'm not using a booster with my 7.5's.

They're fine. Though if your other half is driving the car I would recommend one. They take a bit of force.

Depends on the pads you intend to fit. It does take some getting used to if your other daily drive is an over braked touchy Volvo or Toyota. I must admit I've had a few of these moments  in the Mini but it always pulled up fine.

For the record I've got boosted 8.4" discs on the Rover and non boosted on the other Mini with 7.5" 4 pots and for spirited driving I much prefer the non boosted brakes. For a daily commuter i would lean towards boosted discs.

You get much better feel without the booster, but at the cost of having to push harder.

I would never fit a booster while I still have two good legs!

I have 7.5s with no booster. I have fitted EBC greenstuff and it's like having a booster.

I have one with 8.4's and one with 7.5's both without booster. However the moke will get 8.4's with a booster (Rover master/booster). Maybe I've gone soft?

I'll let ya know what I prefer once the Moke is done.

Never used a booster on my 7.5"s and never felt the need for one.

cheers

same as Jacob,

never found the need for it, on either my 7.5 or 8.4 discs..

Personal preference for all tho, like previously mentioned..

I don't run one with my 7.5" discs (using greenstuffs or blackstuffs) but I'm putting a recond one in the van for the missus. :P

I find it much easier to modulate the brakes when driving hard (with either foot as needed) without the booster. Like said, its all about the feel and with two good legs, I don't need a booster.
cheers

I'm glad to hear the booster is a preference thing. as I'm going from drums to 4 pot 8.4's
One thing I never hear mentioned is the master cylinder. would it be a good idea for it to be changed if going from drums to discs? And is there a benefit to increasing or decreasing the size of the bore in the master cylinder?

Nav my 1275LS is 8.4 with no booster and seems fine to me. Get in touch if you want to take it for a spin round the block. It is not 4 pots but should give you an idea.

My Postcode is 4500..
