Is it possible to buy new locking mechs for Leyland Minis

I really really reallly hate mini door locks almost enought to weld the doors shut and chop the roof off

Does anyone have a Leyland Mini that locks and opens with ease ... i know they are old cars but come on

Buying new locking mechanisms wouldnt fix the problem anyway because you still have to put them on, and putting them on would require adjustment.

You just have to adjust and keep adjusting the plate on the rear of the door handle, as well as the rods feeding the inner door handle, the loop catch on the shell. Have a play and with some trial and error they will work eventually

I know its a pain

no i think mine are screwed

the plastic that wraps around the outside of the catch is busted.

i know some people have welded new handles from other cars in mayb this is the only way

or perhaps a latch and padlock

Hmmm is this inner door handle, outer door handle or outer door lock (circle thing near the handle?)

If you are after some inner door handles:

The MG door handles are very similar - they just have some brackets welded on.

or second hand ones:

I purachsed a NOS set frm the states for one of my Gt's and have looked at them all you need to do is remove some brackets(with a drill) and remove a rod. Not hard to do. Just havnt gotten around to doing it as yet

As for mini ones (made for mini) no you cant. But these cost the same as some stores in australia sell 2nd hand ones for (abut $65). So worth the money you ask me, especially for the new look factor.

Marc, you can test your "catch mechs" easilly by isolating them,,, basically dissconnect both the rods,,, & the lock (key barrel),,, & the outer door handle link

you can then slip a screw driver into the plastic tapers slot in the catch mech as tho you`re closing the door (but leave the door open & only "simulate" closing the door by using a screw driver as the hoop) ,,, i call the "hoop" the piece that`s attached to the B-pillar, the thing that the "catch mech hook" catches onto when the door closes

ok,,, now once you "pretend" to close the door (using the screw driver),,, then pull the lever (on the catch mech) that opens the door (the lower one) while applying an outward pressure on the screw driver in the catch mech

if the screwdriver releases & the catch mech hook swings out,,, then your catch mech works for that part of it

now repeat the procedure, but this time when you "pretend" to shut the door (with your screw driver) then need to lock the catch mech by pushing the locking lever in (the top one)

then when you try to pull the door-opening lever (while applying outward pressure on your faitful screwdriver) ,,, the catch "Should-NOT" release,,, if that`s the case then cool,,, the locking part of the catch mech works too :-)

then pull the locking lever back out & test that the door still opens by once again pulling on the door-opening lever

if this is the case then your door ctach mech works completely,,, both opens & closes & locks & unlocks

ok,,, if that is the case with both left & right catch mechs,,,, well your problem is (more than likely) an adjustment issue

if your problem is the key barrel giving you the sH1Ts & swings around all loose & doesn`t seem to lock or un-lock the catch mechs,,,, then it will either be an adjustment thing (unlikely) or the key barrel is either stuffed or maybe the wrong one fitted

sooooooo,,,, the door handle adjustment should be the last thing to set-up,,, you should be able to have the entire package working without even having an inner or outer door handles fitted,,,, then fit them & adjust them

if you`re stuck with all that (& i expect a whole pile of you will be) but they`re really not that difficult to understand when you work out how simple they actually work)
then bring it over & i can dort if all for you easy-peasy

yes they can be a pain,,, but they are mostly a "miss-understood" item rather than busted---> soooooo many people replace handles & catch mechs simply becasue they "Think" they`re broken, when more often than not it`s just an adjustment issue

in saying that--> i do have plenty of left hand catch mechs,,,, but i doubt i have any right hand ones any more :-)

I also have quite a few key barrel assys

but very few good inner or outer handles left

I got sick of my locking mechanisms, and fitted a keyless entry kit. But before I did that, I took all the mechanisms out and gave them a good clean. I made some new lock seals out of an old inner tube. After putting all the mechanisms back in, they all worked perfectly - it seemed that a clean and adjustment was all that was needed. I fitted the keyless entry anyway.

The other thing I found was that a lot of the pieces were missing, from many years of back-yard mechanicism.
