I just put 34L of Vortex 98 in my car and it ran like a dog, barely made it home.
Missing, farting, pinging...
I had to siphon it all into jerrycans and stick it in the AU Fraud...
Didn't notice any water on the strainer, but it doesn't smell right.
[edit] Runs OK in the Ford so I reckon it's probably E10.

This was from my local Caltex/Woolies, where I've filled up for years.

NO MORE Caltex or Shell Premium for my Mini, I'll stick with BP, thanks.
It might be dearer, I don't care what it costs any more.

yep,,, we all get that sort of crap from some servos now & then,,, BP is, in my opinion, better quality & far more consistent than the others

take a sample to the uni & have it tested,,,, then demand an appology & your money back for both the cost of said fuel & the stuff around because of it

:-)

Getting $$$ back from a servo down here is akin to getting blood out of a stone.
They just deny everything, and call you a liar.

[edit] I reckon we need a name and shame file to highlight these charlatans.
Where is the Dept of Weights and Measures (or acronym equivalent), they used to keep these bastards honest.

I hear a lot about the effects of fuel in a classic mini. I've always just run with standard unleaded - I can't tells the difference between suppliers. I intend to fill up with premium sometime to see the difference, but I keep forgetting.

Do most people use premium? The mini's my daily drive, and switching to premium does make a lot of difference to me price-wise.

I'm just running a standard 998 with a stage 1 kit.

My Mini motors are well modified and both running about 10.7:1 C/R, they NEED 98.
And, there is pretty much no more 91 unleaded left in NSW, it's all going E10.

Your compression ratio will determine if a higher RON fuel is of any benefit. On yours it seems to be low enough to cope with whatever fuel you feed it.

On my last engine, anything less than 98 would have it running on, or pinging under hard acceleration. Only ever used Premium in an emergency, and never under WOT.

Actually, they will refund you - only after you produce a NATA Test Certificate for the fuel you bought, jump though BS hoops to prove that it is the fuel the you bought from their outlet.

The cost of having the fuel tested grossly outweighs the cost of a fill, so they have you by the short and curlys.

98 Octane unleaded is the same colour as 91 Octane, so how the hell do you know what your buying?

I think that's pretty close too - it's all one base then they add "stuff" to get the extra RON/MON points...

cheers

Jacob

Trouble is the 'added stuff' evaporates off in short time. I think some refiners say that the 'added stuff' is only good for about 4 weeks.

Just add some octane booster, that fixes all fuels.

I have used E10 in my BMW for a few years now and if I put std 91 in it runs rough & doesnt go as good! My 6cyl P76 (11.1) I have to use 98ron and an octane booster (104+) to keep it from pinging, or I mix some Avgas in. :D It allways gives a nice colour in the pipe & a good smell, and makes it go good too. :D

The suspect fuel was clear, but the BP 98 Ultimate I then bought is a light shade of green.

When I last looked in to it, it was before the forced sale of E10, at that time Shell Retail Fuels were all Yellow. E10 is descibed as Purple.

http://www.search.shell.com/exit?Search ... 10_tds.pdf

http://www.search.shell.com/exit?Search ... et_tds.pdf

http://www.search.shell.com/exit?Search ... 95_pds.pdf

http://www.search.shell.com/exit?Search ... ds_new.pdf

So with Shell, it's now Bronze (91) (Bronze is pretty close colour to yellow in my books), Yellow (95) and Yellow (98 )

Shell used to have a single page with colour pics. Not now I notice

I thought this was a very good guide;-

http://www.aip.com.au/pdf/fuel_%2520reg ... lIJjNbkzzQ

At least the BP fuels ARE different colours for different Octanes.
