Post subject:  Help, no keys
Hi all, seems that our little terror has made off with my keys. Turned the house upside down looking for them. He has a habbit of placing things in the bin and the trash was collected today. I thought I had some spares but they are nowhere to be seen either.

The car is a 78 leyland.

If I remove the ignition and door barrels could a locksmith cut some new keys? what other options do I have? I'm not too keen on replacing everything. Can the ignition, door and boot locks even be purchased?

A locksmith can cut you new keys for them without a worry. Although i think you will have to take the whole steering column to them as the ignition point is held on there with some sheer bolts, unless you want to remove these :)

My mate in his GT runs his without a key, he has pulled the stering lock out of it and connected the wires to a switch. Not recommended but that is what he did because he didnt have a spare ignition thing.

Minisport SA and probably other places sell door locks with keys. But It will be cheaper getting keys cut for yours.

The sheer bolts can be removed by tapping them with a small screwdriver and a hammer or drill and ezyout tool. You can buy new ones.
As Bubba said any locksmith worth his salt will be able to cut keys for those barrells :D .

You will find the original keys around 2 days after you forked out to get new ones cut :lol:

Not sure which part of Brissie you are in but Pine Rivers Lock and Gun at Lawnton had the correct blanks for the door and ignition and cut them for a standard price.
Give them a call if you want to see if they will do the ignition lock for you.

They also made my door locks match when I g toi a replacement one. Did in on the spot and took about 5 minutes.

If the locksmith you go to has no ignition blanks, there is a toyota one with an almost identical profile but it needs a little creative machining along the key to match the leyland blank.

I once saw a big box of keys at a mini parts shop in melbourne, this was years ago mind you, and it was "dig around until you find one that works"

I know rodney's mini keys have opened other minis in the past, see if you know anyone with keys that will fit your car and just get them cut. saves you the PITA job of taking locks out...

Phew! Found them! Stashed in the corner under a pile of toys in the boys rumpus room. The missus found them actually (embarrassed). I'm eternally grateful to her, not just for finding my keys either ;). Thanks for all your advice :) . I did try the keys for the other 2 leylands btw. Freaked me out a little as they are the original keys. I'm deffo going to get some spares cut and store the originals safely away from inquisitive fingers. Thanks Ausmini, situation normal. Thumbs up

Post subject:  Sheer Bolts removal.
I usually Use a 4 inch angle grinder with a fine 1mm disc and cut a small slot in the snapped head so I can undo them with a screw driver. When you put if back use some Matt black paint to coat them and cover the cut.
