Sorry for another noob question
The previous owner said that it wasn't the standard 850 anymore and was changed to a 998.
Just trying to find out if that was correct.

Sorry for another noob question
The previous owner said that it wasn't the standard 850 anymore and was changed to a 998. Just trying to find out if that was correct.

Certainly not an 850. If the engine no. is right then it's an early Leyland 1098. Could be 998 tho as the blocks are the same (eg. a 998 crank has been used in a 1098 block, only measuring the stroke will tell). cheers Jacob Edit : looks like you have the wrong dipstick too, you need the one with the rubber gaiter on it for that plastic tube. |

The engine number says it is an 1100cc engine out of a 71/72 Clubman. |

hmmm, interesting It has had some rather random crazy things done to it , so who knows..... Yea i know about the dipstick thing, I have to get around to finding a good second hand one for it... |

I have a few of the right type kicking around here if you want one, you can have it for nix. I live about 25km west of the Brissy CBD. cheers Jacob |

So onto my next noob question..... 
It has the standard dynamo fitted not an alternator that i assume would have been on this newer engine. But its not positive earth like it says it should be in the manual... 
Is it changed because the engine is newer, or is there something wrong??? I would have thought that if it has the dynamo that would make it +ve earth and alternator -ve earth.... Am i wrong??? i have run the engine and the electrics do work. i'm just a bit confused... |

Not many +ve earth cars getting around now except concourse original. Swapping to -ve earth was easy, flip the battery around, zap the generator to re-polarise the fields and away you go! Just watch any polarity sensitive stuff like radios, etc. cheers Jacob |

These are all -ve earth these days, have been since around 1970. Leave it as is if you have one, using +ve earth will fry the head unit. No problems running a dynamo/generator on -ve earth, but these days I'd stick an alternator on it. |

What is the downsides to keeping my dynamo??? It does not have a radio in it now and i do not plan on installing one. So the only real load on the electrics system is the lights and wipers. surely the dynamo can handle that. I guess that an alternator would be a bit lighter, as they are a heavy beast of a thing.. and pump out more amps ... Correct???

I run a generator on my everyday road car and I have no problems. No radio, no heater fan, ten years without using the wipers till this year! |

If you don't have anything extra from what you say, then the generator will be fine and they can be very long lasting. I've run one on my car for many years and have one on the 1100S now, it copes fine with high-beam+wipers and everything else, no dramas. cheers Jacob |
