| Post subject: | Early Cooper 997 Rheostat? |
Can anyone in the know tell me if this is perhaps the knob off a early Cooper 997 heater fan rheostat (Potentiometer.....variable resistor)? I found it under the upholstery when I was digging around the car today. You will note it has the letter C embossed into the Bakelite. It is also swaged on the back end to take a small 1/8th shaft, perhaps off the potentiometer it might have been attached to.

That is the choke cable knob from an early 997 Cooper like yours. I'll put up some pics of cars with this choke cable later. The choke on early Coopers is where the washer pump is on later cars. The switch panel has the Air and heater controls. Dont chuck it out its valuable!!! |

Thanks willy, that's invaluable information! I might have searched a long time later on looking for these things. It irks me that these things are still floating around the car. It's like I've only just missed the original components being chucked out by a really short period... |

Hey all. Mick that looks like the rheostat someone has retro fitted to my third party heater. Is it a rare part, and if so are you after one for your Cooper? I could be persuaded to part with it if it helps you out.

Thanks The heater control pot reminds me of the pot used for the dash light dimmers on clubmans. may I please ask for one small favour? Could you please measure the maximum resistance you can get out of the pot from any two terminals as you swing it side to side (apart from off which is of course infinte resistance..)? Around 100 ohms Mick, as far as I can tell as it moves around a far bit as the coil in the switch must be dirty. They are basicly the same switch as what a clubman has for its dash lights, apart from the different knob. |

Mick, mine is nearly identical to the picture, but it was has a 'P' engraved into the knob. It measures 0 - 12 Ohms, with a position where it's O/C I have been using it to control my heater motor and it works fine in this role. Maybe you could epoxy fill the engraving and re-engrave... I would still have to replace with a control though, but I'm not after originality if you know what I mean.  Ihave a feeling this might have come of another BMC product eg MGB, Jag etc

I have never seen a heater fan rheostat on an original 997 Cooper. The early Coopers like the one Mick and I have use a switch to control the fan operation (in the engine bay) and it is mounted centrally below the switch panel using its own special bracket. The Air control and Heater tap knobs are quite different to anything I've seen on other Minis and are the only things now missing on my car. The Choke cable is also very different to anything I've seen as well. Mick you should be able to get a cable/speedo place to attach yours to a new cable with a bit of luck.
