got a crazy question, being new to the mini world.

Q. Are the engine variants essentially the same engine, or are they fundamentally different.

THe reason for asking is that I have a 850cc sitting in the shed, and when it comes time to put an engine back in I think I'll be looking for a 998 or 1100, and want to know if I can use anything off the 850 engine.

Thanks

In the simplest terms, there's not much in common between an 850 and a 998. The major components, e.g. block casting, crankshaft, pistons, conrods, are all different. A lot of the ancillary parts can be interchanged.

Generally speaking replacement 998 or 1098s aren't rare or terribly expensive so you're probably better off just sourcing a whole power unit and dropping it in. Bearing in mind possible compatibility issues with gear changes and drive shafts.

As Madmatt says...

I love 850 engines, they're a great source of bolts for my other engines :D ;)

cheers

There are two different cranks in the 850 , the " thick tail " crank will fit in a 998 but this is only done if a very specific engine build is planned , think square, very square

Given that 850s seem to becoming more collectable......Would it be advisable to preserve these motors?

I have an Mini 850 sitting in the paddock here if any one wants it for parts... going cheap. It has lots of bits missing but engine and box are still there....Ask about price.
