Tyre Rack willl normally order in stuff you want and ship it to you. Places Like Minimania sell mini sized tyres but be prepared for sticker shock.

I was chucked off their message board for pointing out that they mark up tyres 30 to 40% over TR prices......

Cheers, Ian

I tried to find 12" Yokies (639s) for use in Australia. Never even received the courtesy of a reply. Continental-Sime on the other hand stepped up to the plate.

Interest or lack thereof likely related to market presence or simply good manners.

Do tyres bought overseas comply with ADR ? This is a question we should be asking as Insurance companies look at these loop holes to get out of paying for repairs in the case of an accident.

That's a good question.

I have a set of UK sourced A008s on one set of rims, and another set of Oz sourced A008s on another.

I've taken a look and both appear to be identical. The only certifiable standard marked on either tyre is a DOT (Department of Transport (US) ) rating DOT FCBC. This is also accompanied by the tyre size placard which has its own speed/load rating. This placard conforms to the ISO (International Standards Organisation) ratings and are recognised worldwide under the ISO9000 standards.

I'm trying to find more...

According to the RACV, there are no restrictions on the importation of tyres into Australia. This is in part reflected in the import and sale of second hand tyres from overseas. Ive always wondered how they can allow second hand tyres of unknown history to be sold...but there you go.

Vehicles are made to fit a tyre , tyre's are not made for a specific vehicle ( as in model released per Country ) . If the tyre manufacturers had to make a range of tyres to suit the Vehicle Safety Laws in each country or in some cases like America each state they would go broke. As Mick has stated I think you will find that in order for a tyre to be sold commercially it has to comply with the ISO9000 standards, load rating ,speed rating. When someone like Holden makes a Commodore , it would be engineered to use a specific tyre to suit the steering, suspension, braking etc . No car manufacturer is going to build a car and then ask a tyre manufacturer " Can you make a tyre to suit our XYZ Model, and then we will have to make specific tyres to suit the Vehicle Safety Laws in each country we sell them to "

.

The situation in USA is different- there, the tyres must have the DOT rating and many privately imported tyres from Asia or Europe do not have this, so cannot legally be used.

... Europe has a similar set of regulations and markings...

I am unaware of any specific marking / regulations for Australia....

Some great info on the site http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html

Must admit I've just imported some Hakka Rally tyres from the UK - a remould on new carcass - so not sure on legalities for road use in Australia - but I bought mainly for display... so shouldn't be an issue.
